Why is it that when shifting gears. Mercs always sound like someone dropping a brick in a bucket.

I was sanding next to an E-tech a while ago and all you could hear was a nice little click as it moved from N to F.

I've been told that it's just the way Mercs are. Even when you drop the gearbox oil in Mercs it's always dark.

I don't fully understand why they are like this.

Any thoughts.

It's an iron on iron dog clutch, relying on the shock hub in the prop to absorb the shock. A clunk sound is good. Rattling into gear is not good.

If it's downright violent, your idle speed might be a little high.

Dino gear lube will sometimes darken from overheating. The High performance synthetic lube usually keeps it's color for a season.

hope it helps
