Gear Shift Release Problems 07 Glastron

For the second time this year, the gear shift release button on my 07 Glastron has failed. 4.3 liter. The first one was just replaced under warranty. The starting procedure says to "depress the throttle lock while pressing the gear shift release button." That part all goes fine and the boat starts like new. When I bring the throttle back to neutral, however, the boat will NOT shift into forward or reverse. It continues to act like the gear shift button is depressed. Again, an authorized dealer already replaced the first defective one. So, now the boat is again on the lift and I can't go anywhere. Is there any way to bypass this system...or open it up to see why it has failed again? Thanks for any advice.

It is just the standard 4.3 liter V-6, not fuel injected (4.3GL-G?) The control unit was the original equipment...stamped with a Volvo Penta label and includes a toggle trim switch on the control lever. Standard equipment 3 blade prop SX-A sterndrive.
