I'm trying to figure out the gearcase lube viscosity for johnsons lube, I perfer synthetics and have a choice of 75-90 or 90-140 but I am not sure what is stock the bottle does not specify viscosity. I have a 99' 225hp also is the counter rotating gearcase fluid supposed to be darker on changeout than the standard rotation?

Re: gearcase lube viscosity

Use a lower unit gear lube specified for outboard motors ,whether it be synthetic or dino. The lower unit lube viscosity will fall in the 75/90 range.OMC or Penzoil hi-vis is sufficient.

No,a counter rotating engines lower unit oil should not get darker colored any sooner. As long as the drained oil doesn't contain excessive metal filings ,its darker color simply indicates normal wear and is in need of change.

If you use the Ultra HPF available at any J/E dealer, you will be using a synthetic blend lower unit oil. It is formulated to lubricate with a 10% water intrusion better than a normal gear oil.

It is not a hypoid oil and is "thinner" than a 90 grade gear lube.

Only Suzuki and Yamaha specify a hypoid 90 lube.
