Hello Everybody, I'll be online most of the day checking replies and mess. periodically. As some of you may know I've been doing fiberglass repair/gelcoat repair & restoration for 28 years now. With boating season rapidly approaching us, everybody wants to get there boat ready for a great summer of fun and SAFE boating. I love what I do so much that I'm HAPPY to answer any questions ya'll might have. This is a graet web-site for the do-it yourselfers. My only advertisment is word of mouth, 28 yrs exp, my work speaks for itself. So again I love what I do. If you think its to in-depth or dont mind useing a phone (EDIT no phone #s. TD) can't type well] call I live in FL. so eastern time zone. Have a great day and HAPPY and SAFE boating

It certainly sounds like an advertisement. Please go back and re-read the rules.

Thanks.

Yeah, so far it sounds like a pretty solid offer of expertise.

I suggest you watch for threads where folks want gelcoat help and do some posting... the advice you give will make people listen to you, or not.

No one here is really judged on their history or qualifications, but far more on their knowledge and their ability to give sound advice with basis in facts. People trust posters saying "I do it this way because of X, Y, and Z but maybe you know a better way" than "I'm an expert with XXX years experience, you should do it this way".

Anyone with your level of experience should be able to give good advice with sound reasoning behind it, and you should gain a good rep here quickly, which is far better advertising for you and your business than putting the odd text ad up here anyway.

Welcome to Iboats :)

Re: GECOAT restoration questions fromm Gelcoat-Jon

i have a rookie question again. im currently painting the splash guard red in the front of my white boat. brush painting with gelcoat may i add. im almost done with the red now i have to paint some of the white back on the boat that i sanded off while i was prepping to paint the red previously. the only way i could get the red shiny by brush painting was to sand and buff. working well so far.
my question is when butting the white to the red i was going to tape off the red then fair up or brush the white on untill it blends. when i strip the tape when done the two colors probably wont be even and the white wil need sanding and buffing. my concern is that when i do so the red will probably bleed into the white which i dont want. how do you get two colors of gel coat buffed out in transition of colors, i have three places. the top of the splash guard, the bottom and the pin striping . sorry so long and any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
so far from this web site i learned how to do fiberglassing for the first time, use resins and epoxy, paint gelcoat and also wiring batteries thanks to all for the wonderful advice so far so good. if i figure out how to post some pics i will. sorry again for the long post aloha and cheers to all !!!!!!!!

You're probably better off starting a new thread with this question, that way people won't get confused as to what's being discussed.

Picasso, If i'm understanding you correctly you are brushing the gel then sading then buff then to next color? If that is so, not correct, If you can SPRAY all colors. Obviously 1 at a time with cure stage in between. Use Fineline tape 3/4" it will not bleed. If you have to brush, do at least 2 coats with cure in between. NO WAX in 1st coat. Run your tape lines carfully and you should be alright. Good Luck Happy and SAFE Boating

Re: GECOAT restoration questions fromm Gelcoat-Jon

sorry , yes thats what im doing. maybee ill put it a little simpler. i have a white boat with red gelcoated pin striping, if i were to buff the pin striping would the red stain the white?
-such as in a two tone boat... when buffing the boat do you buff the two colors at the same time or cover one color right where the colors meet. in my case red/white.
- p.s. the whole time im sanding and painting the red dust seems to be staining some of the white sections.

hope this makes a little sense. well back to brushing and sanding thank you cheers

hi gelcoat john.....

thanks for the offer of help......and welcome to i boats!

as you can see, the members here are very protective of this site that we all love so much......(its like a close family really) :)

the best way to offer advice is to just comb the threads for anything that looks like a gellcoat question.

also by reading a few posts, you will also start to get to know some of the regular posters........this is a really cool place!

cheers

Gelcoat Jon, I am painting a few coats with a brush. How specifically to get the bumps out and shine? I.e. what grit(s) and or buff? Thanks.
