There's lots of speculation going on and your not really going to tell anything until you start her up and see what she sounds like.. I have a 470 that is in a 1984, 24' JC Tritoon. When I bought her for a project boat she had been setting in a pasture in Applespring, Texas for 5 years. I had to have the starter rebuilt but she started right up that was three years ago. I have done the altenator conversion and replaced the upper of the outdrive and other maintenance items but she runs just fine.

Thank you. Honestly, I'm not obsessed with the 470 except that I can see a whole lot more work and money being spent that I don't have when I start swapping out engines, outdrives, etc. I can see myself going ; oh, that doesn't fit, I have to get this . oh, that doesn't work I have to change that and that's expensive , etc., etc. When all I have to do is at the most (hopefully) is do a rebuild and slap it back in the same way it came out It's a whole lot easier fixing something that's already there than trying to start from scratch. After doing all of the work I'm going to do on it, the last thing I want to consider is reselling it. I didn't buy it as an investment. I bought it because I wanted it. I didn't spend much on it and I really don't plan on getting top dollar out of it if I ever sell it. Maybe I'll have it buried with me. I may be wrong but getting parts for the 470 hasn't been a problem yet. I've talked to a couple of marine mechanics that rebuild them and they were able to put them all together just fine.

The part I found extremely hard to find and expensive for the 470 is the intake manifold for the 4bbl carb. The 2 bbl is cheap and easy to find. Everything else has not been a problem.

If you are going to be a 470 owner you need to know about www.breezeworks.net it is a 470 only website and forum. Not a lot of activity but a great place to look for parts, and the best altenator conversion kit in the marketplace. Plus not so many of those who have never owned a 470 slamming them. Just good imput from 470 owners.

I've also had to recently replace a few parts (exhaust elbow and manifold, head gaskets and couple other odds and ends) and haven't had too much of a problem finding them

A 470 is an excellent engine if you understand its potential issues which get repeated ad nauseum.1. Cam leakut a speedy sleeve on itll last almost forever. Head gasket yes I suppose they are more vulnerable but not that bad. Try not to overheat it! I ran mine for 20 years and only did the head gasket once and that was because the engine got VERY hot.So hot it actually melted the hydraulic oses to the trim cyls. No engine would have fared better IMO.They dont go bad with normal use and slight overheats was my exp.Alternator could easily last years. The swap to a belt driven alt.is easy and not expensive if you shop around. Parts arent a problem what you cant get new are readily available used. A 470 rebuild is easy to do and would serve you well if you choose that route.

i just finished rebuilding my 1983 470 had a great time doing it that's what's important everybody has there opinion you can't please everybody you know what i mean do i buy a ford or GM your going to have good and bad about both just like the 470. a well maintenenced 470 it will last for 15 years

Resale value should not be an issue, after all we are talking about a 33 year old boat here, not much resale value there to start with. The object here should be a good reliable engine for a minimum cost. A rebuilt 470 is every bit as reliable as any other engine. However if you neglect it and fail to do the proper maintenance it will cause you trouble. A well rebuilt 470 should give another 10-15 years of reliable service. One advantage is that with the closed cooling, winterization is a snap, Guaranteed you will not see any 470 owners here in the spring asking "why does my oil look like a chocolate milkshake"? No winter cracked blocks in the "470 club". IMHO.

Issues.
To give you an idea, I have a 470 (in a donor boat) that has excellent compression and runs great. Unfortuantely the seal I spoke of has gone bad. I'm junking the engine. Not worth the time and money to repair it IMHO. (The previous owner did the alternator conversion and installed the larger heat exchanger its still not worth the time or money to repair.)

Parting it out or junking it? I would be willing to make the drive if you are giving it away! These are great engines when cared for. Mine is 33 years old with hundreds of hours on it.
