Getting a 35hp running after 15 years of sitting

I will be attempting to get a 35hp Merc. outboard running after it has been sitting for about 15 years. It was put into our barn after the summer of '89 and cannot be too much older then that. I would guess that it is somewhere in the range of '85 to '88 model year, and is nearly new in terms of use (less then 50 hours on it).<br /><br />Is there anything specific that I should be looking for in terms of getting this thing running again? I dont suspect anything major to be wrong with it as I know that it was running good last time it was used. I am just trying to figure out what I may run into before I start.<br /><br />Thanks<br />-ethan

New gas<br />New waterpump<br />New lower unit lube<br /><br />If it were me, I would take some 2-stroke oil and put it in the cylinders and turn it over by hand to get the cylinders good and oily, then flip it over open the throttle all the way up and do the same thing through the carbs. You definately do not want to dry start that motor if it has been sitting for that long.

i just did this with a 1976 merc 115hp that had been sitting since 1985<br /><br />this is what i did<br />removed and rebuilt/cleaned carbs<br />replaced entire waterpump kit(not just impellar)<br />replaced plugs<br />check compression and check for spark<br />check that the fuel pump works, if not rebuild<br /> note: before checking compression, squirt some tcw-3 oil in the cylinders before having the motor turn over.....<br /><br />let us know how it works out

The 35 hp ran 1963 to 1969, and 1984 to 1989. If you have a serial number we can nail a year for you.<br /><br />Chris...........
