Getting gaskets to seal on pitted surfaces.

I am in the process of replacing almost all the gaskets on a 1960 Merc 400, and I'm tryng to find out what other people have used. The gasket I'm having an issue with is the Cylinder Block Cover Gasket, I have tried to slighly smooth the surface but I can't take to much off because the area that has the issue is where the water flows around the cylinders and it has the 4 holes for the spark plugs. Sorry I'm rambling, basically I put the cover back on with the new gasket and I'm leaking water around where the gasket seals around the holes for the spark plugs. Thanks for any help.

You can use a liquid/gel gasket compound out of a tube for this... Or an ATV Silicone...

This will not be subjected to oil/gas so it will work as a water/seal very well. Just let it set up before presurizing the gasket.

Just run a very, very thin bead on both sides of the gasket and re-install. And you only need to apply it on the outer surfaces that water can escape through the cover...

Thank you for the help. I've been trying to avoid ordering a new cylinder block cover, that is even if I could find one for a 46 year old outboard motor. Iknew there was a way I could get it done I just wanted to find out what I should use. I'll let you know how it goes.
