Re: getting on plane with my 350V Merc XR2 150

well its official my mechanic has had my boat longer than me! this is a real bummer...my mechanic has had my boat on the water 4 times now with 5 different props,he's checked the stator, rebuilt the carbs, checked the jetting, replaced some wiring that had fuzed together from the original owner over heating the engine, and a whole lot of other stuff that is foreign language to me.

I am desperate and have called two VERY reputable bass boat repair shops and they are twice the price of my current mechanic. If there is anything someone can recommend for me to try I'd really appreciate it. To make matters worse my mechanic had another customer come by and say he recognized the boat and said he knew the guy who sold me my boat. Apparently the previous owner bought it with a burnt up engine and put some parts into it and sold it because he couldn't figure out the plane issue. My mech is thinking they maybe put the wrong size power head on possibly but still needs to find a number on the PH and reference the size.

I am gonna recommend he try the 2+2 prop but I don't think he has one. He'd said he tried a 23p 5 blade prop that's ported and currently the 19 that came with the boat is on it. any help you guys can offer would be great!

just talked to a guy who recommended I use a 23p prop with an 8" jack plate....might this help get the boat out faster? or a jack plate with a turbo 2+2

I don't know much about props, but i can tell you for sure that it's a better idea to first find out about a potential powerhead switch by previous owner or water logged foam before throwing too much money in props, jackplates and so on.

Quick fixes aren't the solution. Better to find the cause than wasting let's say 500$ for a prop + another 500$ for a jackplate and ending with the same result. This is the best advice i can give you, beleive me!

I'm just searchin' for the worse case scenario....my mechanic said it is purely engine...he can tell by the way it bogs down from the start up he said.

thanks for your insight we are really not trying to throw parts at it right now but we've eliminated a ton of stuff. Right now its not wet foam nor a switched power head. I just got off the phone with my mech the boat is doggin' it between 2000-3000 still. One tech I spoke to today recommended I raise the engine up (it currently sits two holes down from even) and start prop tuning after I get a better hole shot.

does anyone know if changing the mid-jet will bring it out of the hole faster? and if so what are the side effects?

You need to get your prop shaft 2.5" below the pad install whale tail/ sting ray/ whatever you find cheap that has a V configuration so it stays out of the way once your under way.

You also need to watch your water pressure when you jack up the motor.

it wouldnt hurt to add 6" - 10" setback remember for every 1" back you need to go up 1/4"

You should be runnig a 14 3/4"- 15" diameter vented 20- 21 pitch prop 3 or 4 blades

hi, dont care much for more jack plates and huge props, just more to fail or have to mess with, just tune the motor , and check the compression, next feed it more fuel , filter , fuelpump, kinked hose, the simple stuff, then a 19 to 21 pitch stainless vented 3 blade or 4 and then go have fun, its usually the simple things we dont check that influence the most, good luck ron

thanks for the feedback Ron.

well I talked to Bob's Machine Shop and Robert recommended I try their Mercury V-6 Velocity Stacks. Have any of you tried these? One site recommends going up two jets sizes.

Skip the velocity stacks til you've ironed out your mid-range problem, discribe your holeshot proceedure, in detail, what, if any, trim, etc.

There is no real mechanical 'majic' just solid physics, compression, spark, timing, fuel, all dialed in correctly = performance.

Step back, take a deep breath and once your head has cleared, start over, recheck everything, starting with the basics. There are too many assumptions and it just doesn't add up.

What is the compression on each cyl?

How much spark gap can you get?

Etc.

Somewhere you will see something.

my mech. has done all these things 3 and 4 times and nothin' is coming up. We were hoping the velocity stacks would help out the holeshot.

anyone out there used them?
