I just picked up my 1st boat and have little to no experience in outboard care and maintenance. It?ll hit high 40?s later this week and I would love to take the boat out and give it a good run to see if the outboard works.

It?s a 35 hp Evinrude. Previous owner winterized it over the winter months. What do I have to check or get ready, before I head down to the boat ramp?

Re: Getting ready...

Welcome!! you are in the right place for info!! Great place. search for awakening a sleeping outboard lots of great info...Get a service manual...if it was winterized I would just change lower unit oil...get under there and make sure nothing made its winter home there..grease any fittings you see....make sure gas is in good shape...get some muffs to hook it up to a hose and try to start her up...put muffs on, turn water on, pump bulb up till tight, choke her and give her a spin...GOOD LUCK!!..Gotta love boating!!!

Re: Getting ready...

oh yeah...if its your first boat..I'm sure you know...but you'll be mixing gas with oil...50:1 ratio...if you have a six gallon tank mix one of those small bottles of TCW-3 oil with it and fill her up. You probably know that...but just to be sure.. :D

And if it's your first boat and you're on a busy waterway a general boating course can be invaluable also.
