All six cylinders at 105-110 compression and runs very well w/o a load but no acceleration in water. Found head gaskets leaking. Cylinder walls are clean and smooth. Can slightly move piston head inside of cylinder. Can see rings.Feeler gauges around .003 and cannot pass thru w/o a lot of effort.Question is can I re-ring the pistons w/o disassembling the block? Can the rod bearing end caps nuts be reached if the reed valve block is removed? Have cleaned and kitted the carbs, floats were off. Thought of just replacing the head and cover gaskets but if the rings can be reached....<br />Thanks, Doug in Chas., SC

I do not believe you can do rings that way. How would you get a torque wrench in to tighten if you could? Besides you are measuring piston to wall clearance & condemming the rings. 110 does not sound too bad, & fairly even across the board, I think your problem is elsewhere.

Compression is fine ... no need to do anything but replace head gaskets and torque the head bolts. Don't forget to retorque after ~ 10 hrs running time. And no, you can't replace rings w/o dissaembling the engine. Sounds like you could use an OEM shop manual.

And in case you are not aware of it, there is a certain sequence that the head bolts must be torqued. This is IMPORTANT to insure you get a proper seal. You manual will give you the sequence.

Many thanks to all who replied. My manual did not cover the mentioned possibility so I thought I'd ask. Consensus is a definite "no". Manual does have torque sequence for head and cover. Thanks for the assurance on the compression.<br />Doug
