Re: ghr gimble repair kit

silicone was not used to seal the water out, it was just used on the inside to prevent any more corrosion to the alum. if more water got into the bellows area.
I can't see why silicone will react with alum. They use it in automotive uses with alum.
I can see salt water getting under the silicone between the alum. then causing more corrosion, but this will only happen if the silicone does not stick to the alum.

I plan to pull the drive after I use the boat for a week to see if any water is in the bellows. I sealed the bellows with bellows adhisive and only added th silicone to the inside, which I can remove. What would you recomond I put on the alum to prevent more corrosion if water leaks into the bellows again in the future. What ever I use needs to not react with the bellows.
Thanks,

The results was a successful repair. Ran the boat for 25 hrs and sat in the water for about 4 days.
Pulled the outdrive when I got home no water at all, the bellows with no groove and bellows glue worked, but I still had enough lip left for a full hose clamp to clamp the bellows.
However the water that had gotten in had rusted the input shaft enough where the seal leaked outdrive oil into the bellows, so solved the water problem, but the water problem caused another problem.
Luckly my sei outdrive was still under warranty, for the cost of shipping I shipped the upper half back to sei, they replaced the seal, the whole u-joint/shaft assembly, installed all new seals, gears. Basically rebuilt the whole upper unit. It cost me shipping one way to Florida about $65. Turn around was about three weeks from the time I shipped to the time I got the outdrive back.
I put the two halves together pressure tested and all looks good, try it in the spring.
