Somebody half-assed a repair there, do you have any water leaking in near the steering arm? Salt water boat? Is there play in the swivel joint inside that area?

what it should look like. You can't get that part from BRP but they are out there on ebay..

https://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/55333.cfm?mdl=79T1GO

part # 28 in the diagram.

Boat wasnt salt water until this year when i used it. there was way less rust and more sealant before my first season. I do get some water that accumulates in bilge. After getting growling when turning boat from back of boat, i suspected my gimbal bearing was going. Just paid a marina to replace gimbal bearing and bellows before this season. Turns out after pulling the drive the grease tube from the gimbal housing to the grease fitting on the starboard side corroded away, allowing water in, ruining this brand new gimbal bearing. (The shop failed to warn me about this after they just repaired it this year) So with that know leak im not sure if steering arm leaks aswell. Ill need a new seal too for steering arm do you think bolting a new cover and gasket stop any possible issues?

That site you linked seems to allow me to order #28 the cover. Will that one work?

From inside boat steering ram coming into boat from drive has no play. Steering ram that connects perpendicular to it has play up and down right where it connects. Outdrive can be turned left or right from back off boat but pushing it starboard sometimes feels way more resistive when pushing manually. No steering issues when driving boat. Power steering model.

If you can get that cover the seal and the bolts and replace it. Try lifting the drive up and down and see if there is play in that area. If it’s tight then replace the cover and seal and see if you still get water inside....

is this play not normal? i havnt pulled that corroded cover off yet. but outdrive is removed and im pulling and pushing on trim cylinders and getting play. as shown in this youtube video. Should i address this play under that corroded cover or somewhere else? or is this considered normal?
