18.5' 1974 IMP Ford 302, pre Alpha: I am getting ready to re-install the gimball housing to the transom of this boat. It has a cork gasket, but should I also use 5200, or something else? How does one keep the cork gasket in place while installing/tightening the bolts? Finally, what is the torque for the various bolts?

You know what? I poured over Manual #2 and don't have an answer .....I recommend that you wait for Bondo, Rodbolt or Don S. to answer this question....There are newer and better sealants now and I would wait for a reply from one of them to proceed...It is such a vital part that I would wait for one of the people who do this on a normal basis for the right answer...JK

memory says that the gasket goes on dry. make sure the surface of the transom is flat,clean and not damaged. make sure ya use new orings on the lower two bolts if called for. some did some did not. I see a lot of rigs that have a bead of 5200 applied after installation.

I found some info in a Seloc manual for proceedeure and torques, but it did not say anything about the cork gasket. The old one was stuck to the housing (bellows adhesive?) but was dry againt the transom. I've been advised in the past to fill/seal the anode bolt holts at the bottom with 5200. This boat looked like it may have something around the housing before, but had been scraped off before I got it.<br /><br />Almost every OD I've seen has a bead of silicon of 5200 type sealer around the housing, added after installation.<br /><br />I'm just trying to do all I can to avoid another darned leak!

Would it be OK to use some bellows adhesive to stick the cork gasket to the housing? I don't want to use silicon because the cork might slide/squish out of place while I'm torquing the nuts. It will be dry against the boat.

I don't know about the specific housing gasket you are refering too, but I use 'spray on' contact adhesive to hold cork gaskets in place, quick & simple.

Thank, Dunaruna. It is the gasket between the gimball housing and the transom of the boat. Do you mean just regular spray adhesive, or some special marine stuff?

Just regular spray adhesive, it's won't help seal, it only holds the gasket in place.<br /><br />I am not a marine mechanic, I don't know how critical that particular gasket is. You may also need a sealant but then the contact won't stick. I imagine that is why rodbolt sees 5200 on the outside AFTER installation.

A Big Glob of Grease will hold a gasket in place...........Almost Any Gasket,....Without Ill Effects........ <br /><br />As for what You're Doing,......<br />I Doubt it Really Matters,....... So long as you're within the 2" to 2,1/8th"s window for the Overall thickness between the Inner,+ the Outer............<br />If you Never plan to Remove it again,.... Feel Free to use All the 5200 you'd Care Too............

we use 3m weatherstip adhesive or scotchgrip on the shield side. then mount the shield to the hull, for the shield torque specs maybe DonS still has an installation guide that old. I dont. the 5200 will only be a bedding AFTER the shield has been installed. its a very good sealant/adhesive but not desined for a gasket sealer.

Thank you all. I sprayed the cork with a light coat of 3M adhesive and stuck it onto the shield. I put 5200 in the holes for the anode bolts. Had the wife hold the shield in place while I threaded the nuts & bolts from inside the boat. I will trim the cork around the shield then put a bead of 5200 around it to the transom. Hopefully, I won't have any leaks! Thanks again! <br /><br />By the way, Bondo, this is the same transom assembly you sent to steve n carol.

Man O Man,.........<br /><br />That thing Really has some Miles on it,...........<br /><br />I got it from a Refit we did on a Hy-Liner that came from Boston............. <br /><br />Glad to see it's Finally going back to Work............
