gimble bearing and engine allignment

Hey.

ok so i had a busted coupler which i replaced my self. i got the coupler for 150 and its pretty new.
now my gimble is seized and i got the new one. i pulled the old one out with a newly bought slide hammer.
i dont know how to put the new one in and it didnt come pre-greesed.
my questions are...how to greese it, wht grees do i need and where to get this from and how is the gimble supposed to be pushed in place?
also from the looks of it the engine coupler looks pretty center when i look through the transom. should i still get the tool to allign it? i did make sure that then engine is placed exactly where it should be and i am sure its in proper.

Yes you still need to align with the tool in my opinion. I bought one off ebay from a store called Heartland Products. It is built with great quality and price. I have never replaced a gimble bearing yet so I cant help you there.

Yep its not bad.. .. There is a hole on my bearing you have to line up with grease tube.. Dont hit the center.. Press in from the outside.. They also make a install tool you can buy on ebay.. My bearing was a lot tougher to pull than to install

Its not an opinion. You must use an alignment tool. No ifs,ands or buts about it. If your'e not using one your gimbal bearing replacement is pointless...

Outside of the bearing is a corrugated steel band.
Slide it around until you see the opening of the grease hole and make a mark with a marker pencil on the bearing.
Look inside the gimbal bearing housing, find where the grease tube gets out, make another mark at the housing.
Align the mark on the bearing with the one on the housing and put in the bearing.
Now you need a tube/socket or whatever that fits on the outer aluminum ring of the bearing and about 1 ft long!!!
As alternative you may buy the 'original' tool.
Use a LEAD/COPPER mallet to knock it in, and be sure your tool is properly seated and the bearing does not tilt.
When the bearing has seated and the marks hopefully still aligned, fill with grease.
The grease must come out just at the center ring, not at the outer ring. Then you know it has been properly greased.

Throw the bearing in your freezer overnight. Believe it or not, the metal will shrink just enough to make it easier to tap the bearing home. You can even use a piece of pvc pipe to seat the bearing. Just don't hit the center. And u must do the alignment or you'll be replacing the coupler again.
