Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

Seeing all these 22 footers with the 2.5 and 3.0 in them brings me to a question.. How do these 22' Islanders perform with the 4 cylinder?

should be similar to your current boat with same drivetrain. they have a lot more hull area but should get up on plane faster due to weighing less.

of those 3, i like the one in LaGrange.....storage INSIDE is worth a lot, in terms of what all you'll be up against resto-wise, and since you want a more or less turnkey boat......

I remember my dads '21' Chief running 45 MPH on average but it could do 50MPH on glass. I can't remember if that was GPS speed or not.

And there is where we see how heavy these little glass boats are, the best my 18' has ever hit with the 3.0 is 38mph GPS, and with it propped that way it took quite a while to get up on plane with a full load.. it was almost painful to witness as it struggled to finally get the bow up and out of the water.

Matt....are you sure that was with the 4 cylinder? that's flying. if those speeds are accurate, i'll bet it had the 165hp I6. i'd guess the 4 banger in that hull will make 30-35 tops.

a crazy thought: have you considered trying to get a ride in a similar boat before you make the call? internet research is great but no substitute for actually being in one.

The low cost leader, and possibly the closest:
1974 STARCRAFT ISLANDER 22' CUDDY CABIN 3.0 MERCRUISER TANDEM TRAILER

Ya but somebody painted the Mercruiser outdrive pale blue. Who would do a thing like that? No-one in the Starmada would do such a thing would they? :peep: -Grandad

Unfortunately islanders and chieftains are VERY rare around these parts, that chieftain at the beginning of the thread is the only one I've seen around here ever.

What do you fellas think of this one? This may even be someone on here, it looks like an incredible restoration. I've requested more pictures of it. My only concern is the engine that's in it...

Looks pretty nice, but in my world, 470 makes it a deal breaker.

Maybe I am overly picky, but this search is harder than I thought it'd be. Lol.

I wonder why a guy would do all that restoration work and then stick the old 470 back in it...

Cost. Nothing wrong with a 470 that's in good operational condition but I think that boat is older than the engine/drive. The 470/3.7L came out in 1978 but I don't think Starcraft used them until after 1981, and some time in the early 1980's Starcraft went from the lapstrake sides to smooth sides on the Islander, so that boat is older

Other than being extinct. And NLA. And unsupported. And problematic.

Besides that, it's pretty awesome.

Really? All those great things?

Are we posting from the pew this morning? :D:eek:

Re: Glass owner here dreaming about a tin cuddy

Just wanted to post a couple notes on here about the islanders, I have a 22' Islander 1983 that has lapstrake sides and a 140 hp 3.0.
With 3 adults and fishing gear and a 15 hp kicker and 25 gallons of fuel she will just break 34 mph on the gps. Of course this is on glass smooth conditions. I enjoy my 3.0 very much, plenty of power for lake erie as our normal cruising speed is 22-24 mph on the chop that the lake normally has. Very good fuel economy (for a boat) and easy to tow. We trailer ours everywhere and keep it stored in our pole barn. Single axle trailer (3600 lb) with 1975lb rated radial tires, total weight is 3300lbs.

I like that boat a lot! I'm not personally fond of the colors and wish it had a little bigger engine. But that's just being picky.

BUT! It looks solid, in great shape, trailer looks good, comes with tons of gear, I think fairly priced too!

Though, I'd show up with $5K in one pocket and another few hundred in the other pocket for backup.

Anyway, that's a pretty good find:thumb:

Looks pretty good to me. He arleady took out the 470 in favor of a reliable 140. Can't tell if the drive is still a 470 drive, but you might need to buy a 1.98 geared leg for optimal performance if he left the 470 leg. It would be close enough for trolling for salmon which is all he did with it, but probably limits the top speed by having to run less prop to keep it workable
