Re: glastron 1977 v195 engine removal

I just pulled the engine out of my 1991 boat - 7.4L V8. Yours is a bit older, so I'm not sure what may be different.

Outdrive would have to come off. Then you got to disconnect every thing electrical and fuel related. It is best to take the battery(ies) out of the boat before you start disconnecting things. Often the engine hatch has to be removed to gain full access to the engine and be able to raise it out of the boat. One of the last things would be to loosen the engine mounts.

So, what do you have to raise the engine? Figure that a V8 is going to weigh 800 - 1000 lbs. You could use a chain hoist if you have something strong overhead. You could also use an engine hoist with the extender bar. You will need to raise the engine to about 8 feet to insure clearing the deck height. the lower you can get the boat, the less you have to raise the engine. I had to get my engine almost 8 feet in the air to clear things.

You will want an engine stand or some blocks to rest the engine on as you lower it to the ground.

I'm sure you will get more advice from others, but that's my experience to share.

There are some more pictures on my web site in the "engine rebuild" pages. Link in my signature.

Remove drive.
Remove bolts that hold front mounts to stringer.
Remove 2 aft mount bolts.
Disconnect, PS hoses, fuel hose, throttle and shift cables, electrical harness connector, battery cables. and any other wires attached to engine.
Lift engine from boat.

The upper drive?
So I do not need to remove the entire unit from the transom, correct??

Bare with me as I am new to boating, but am mechanically capable.

If any pictures that would be great.

Thanks,
Rod

The outdrive has to come off because the drive shaft goes through the transom and into the engine. Once the outdrive is removed (easy part, like Don says) you will still have the transom plate and bell housing, which can stay as is.

Definitely read through the manual before you start. (I just look at the pictures).

Thank you for the link......but I looked at the drive and it has a "280" on it ..........is that the same manual? I think I get the idea so....looks like I will go for it. As I am excited to get it in the water.
Oh one other thing.....carburetor needs replacing any ideas or will any gas carb do???

Thanks in advance.....

If you are taking the engine out, you are a ways off from getting the boat in the water.

HAS (must) be a marine carburetor, else you will explode someday. As a matter of fact all the electrical and fuel related systems must be marine versions due to the risk of fumes exploding in the bilge compartment. they are different than the automotive versions of these parts.

Disreguard the manual link and the information I gave, that was for a Mercruiser (you posted in the Mercruiser forum) and you actually seem to have a Volvo Penta. One of the Moderators noticed that and moved it here to the Volvo forum.
So before we go any further, you need to read this thread.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=220416 Because a Volvo does not come apart like a Mercruiser.

Usually on a decal, possibly there is a metal tag on the engine aft of the oil filter on the block.
The drive, may still have the tag on the upper gear box, just in front of the top cap of the outdrive.
If all else fails, pictures help.

Re: glastron 1977 v195 engine removal

Here is a thread that shows how to get the engine and flywheel cover loose from the transom shield.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=516093&p=3482589&viewfull=1#post3482589

Then you take the engine loose inside the boat by disconnecting the exhaust hoses, water hoses, electrical connectors, fuel lines, throttle cable, battery cables, and anything else holding it in.
There is no manual from Volvo for removing the engine.

If you look up in the Adults only sticky in the Volvo information, there are links to the service manuals.

Re: glastron 1977 v195 engine removal

Don, well followed directions and got the upper drive ready to pull out, but it will not come out. Is there a trick to pulling it from the engine??

Does the lever have to be in drive or nuetral?? I can't see any reason that it won't come off. Boat has been sitting for a year if that makes a difference.

Excited to get it out so i can pull engine.

Thanks Rod

Re: glastron 1977 v195 engine removal

the ujoint yoke may be rusted onto the driveshaft...there is nothing holding the upper gearbox to the flywheel cover, or the driveshaft.
