Sorry RF.

How is this?

But you will believe it because ( insert name of favorite spokes person with an adgenda) says so?

So, back to the question in the title of this thread.

Global Warming Myth or Reality

It depends where you are.
Some places on this planet are experiencing global cooling right now.

There is not even agreement in the science community about what is going ON

One of the big fights is about the validity of the artic models there useing to figure the thing out

tommays

Most scientists believe we are in a warming trend. Some dispute it.

There are many scientists that are paid by one side of the debate or the other, and if you pick the evidence you want to believe, you can "prove" either side of the debate.

The reality is that it is very complex science, and science is not likely to come up with a definitive cause and effect analysis.

If it is normal cycles, then all will be well, or at least we can't do anything about it anyway...

If it is indeed caused by human production of greenhouse gasses, and we could reverse it (or at least slow it) it could have devastating consequences.

It's hard to believe that all the CO2 among other things we are putting in the atmosphere have *No* effect, however...

Your own conclusion depends on how much of a gambler you are, I suppose.

Mother Nature does what pleases her. What is happening has happened many times before and was usually followed by an ice age.

One Pinatoubo, Krakatoa or Tamboro eruption could (and probably will) cool the earth for years and cause mass extinctions. That has happened before also. My Great Grandfather's scrapbook is loaded with news reports of the 24 month winter that followed Krakatoa in 1883.

One big meteor or other space rock can do the same, as it has before.

It is the supreme arrogance of our species to think that we can change what the earth is going to do. What we should do is what our ancestors did. . .adapt.

Global Warming, what a wonderful advertising slogan.
politicians are not scientists, almost all of them are unscruplous lawyers which the general public in their naivity have voted into public office, it is within the self interest of all politicians to manipulate the facts to suit their agenda.
From the very begining all living creatures on planet earth have had to adapt themselves to an ever changing environment, this is not something that is a new phenomenon, quit acting like sheep.

Standard answer from me: True or not, most supposed solutions are good for us anyway i.e. efficiency improvements. They will happen with or without assistance from knuckleheads that are smarter than all of us and can predict the future  If the economics favor a technical advance or efficiency benefit of one technology vs. another, it will be adopted. No economic advantage, no adoption.

Well it sounds like I am not alone believing that natural warming / cooling cycles occur. I have always had it in for research that is skewed. Anyone who has ever had a stats course knows that data can be manipulated to show what you want to.

Read Michael Crichtons State of Fear, it not only talks about global warming but it is backed up by tons of data.

But on the other hand, I dont believe that our man made pollution has had no effect on our world..anyone driving past Sudbury ontario in the 70s thought they were on the moon.

The thing of it is, if a politician comes up with a proposal as a "solution" to a problem we haven't really nailed down as existent, hang on to your wallet. It seems to me that a lot of politicians---and not just in the USA---want to hurry up and "solve" the problem. I do not trust them, and I can't see why anyone would! Given the choice between adopting their "solutions" and doing nothing, I think I'd rather do nothing at all.

There's more REAL evidence that they are trying to pull the wool over our eyes than there is that the problem truly exists and is man-made.

Iceages come and go. Always will. Look at how the five Great Lakes were formed. Opinions can be bought, but if you diversify your information sourses and not listen to a few, you will be able to draw a better opinion. Makes you look better as well.

Man made polution does have an effect. One degree or two makes a large difference. The ice cap has been melting over the past hundred years or so. I saw an overlay of maps. It was explained the temperature of the water by just a little can attack the ice from below. Makes a big difference to land animals that depend on the ice flows.

P.O.N.Y., Iceland and Greenland were named to trick people into deciding on where to emigrate.
If you want a nice area of land for yourself, you call it iceland.

Re: Global Warming Myth or Reality

In my lifetime I have seen great change due to our attempts to reduce the damage we do to our environment and to our fellow species that inhabit earth. The trouble is, that is limited to North America, Australia and western Europe.

In spite of what the tree huggers tell us, what we do in the USA and Canada is trivial on a global scale. Asia and the third world are not economically ready to do anything about their pollution and until they are we are just spitting upwind in trying to "clean up the planet".

We are doing a good job of cleaning up North America. Settle for it.

Re: Global Warming Myth or Reality

It's amazing to me how science has become mixed with politics and therefore rendered rather useless when it comes to serious debate about very serious environmental issues. I tend to believe those scientists who support the global warming (or climate change) theories. I find it very hard to believe that with all the world wide industrialization and pollution that has taken place over the last 100 years that it has not had or will not have a major impact on our environment. From what I have read CO2 is the major problem. It seems a little niave to me to believe that we can look back and compare what happened in the 12th or 13 century to what is going on now, given the huge changes our world has undergone since then.

I also find it very interesting that the Bush administration finds it necessary to have a lawyer in the white house edit the study results from the leading NASA climatology scientists before they are made public. Now there's something you can trust!!! A scientific study edited by a white house lawyer!!!

I never said Greenland was named for being all green. I know the Erik the Red stories, and why Greenland became Greenland. Fact is at one point a portion of it was VERY fertile and supported the Vikings for years. Trees, Grass, etc. The other Fact is that they died in famine from not being able to farm anymore, most likely because of the "Mini Ice Age". If I implied that Greenland was all green and named by such I surely didnt intend to, as that is wrong.

I normally hate to use wikepedia as a reference to much.....but this is worthy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

What JB said both times. And others.
It's happened before and will again.
Look at history.
Better yet try learning from history!
