why do you need to adjust them? and is this the buick motor of the late 60's early seventies or the chevrolet motor. the buick has the dist up front I believe and the chevrolet usually in the rear.

Adjust valves by backing off adjusting nut until lash is felt at the push rod, then tighten until lash is removed (try turning push rod with your fingers) then tighten adjusting nut one full turn.

With #1 cylinder @ TDC, Adjust intake on 1, 2 and 3. Adjust exhaust on 1, 5 and 6.
With #4 @ TDC, adjust intake on 4, 5 and 6. Adjust exhaust on 2, 3 and 4.

Re: gm 3.8l 239 valve adjustment

the easiest way for a novice to do it is in pairs. rotate the motor in the normal direction of rotation until the intake valve closes(lifter goes down. then continue until the piston is about TDC. then carefully tighten the rocker nut until the slack comes out of the pushrod. this can be felt by rotating the rod while tightening the nut. then go 3/4 to 1 full turn. lifter preload should be about .05" to.100". do each cyl like the first. no need to run the engine and make a mess. the method of just turning the engine twice works well but I see to many novice techs get all confuzzeled and miss one. on our race car I had marks on the rockers to assist me between rounds :) :) . sometimes we would only have 15 min to do what we had to do then its back to the staging lanes. and yes I have been known to be buttoning it up in the staging lanes while the crew was pushing it fwd :) :) . so if you attempt the two turn method clean a rocker surface with alchohol and make white paint marks on all the rockers to adjust at TDC compression stroke for #1 cyl . do all the marked ones at TDC #1 compression stroke. just be aware that TDC on all the pistons comes twice but the valves can only be adjusted when its tdc compression stroke.
