In my little experience I can definitely say that my Toyota is the best vehicle I have ever owned. My family has had many different types of vehicles and most were ok(got to point a and back). Most start having problems at 100K so they get sold. My uncle bought his 1987 Toyota truck new and abused the CRAP out of it every day hauling oil and debis from grease pits. Well he racked up 300,000 on it, never even had to replace the clutch or anything. I got the truck several years ago due to him owing me money and cleaned it up. There was so much grease and oil in the back it was all caked up on the underside. Took me two weeks to clean. Now I drive that truck to work and back every day. I live in Nacogdoches and work in Longview, so I put nearly 1000 miles a week on it. Well a few months ago, the freeze plug started leaking behind the transmission, and I, being a lazy *** , sold it rather than fix it. I got 2000 for it, which amazed the crap out of me because it looked like it was driven through a meat grinder. This is probable the biggest mistake of my life. That truck had 512,000 on it, still blew cold air and got 26 mpg. Now I own a 2004 Tacoma which I like, but not the notes. I useds that truck for everything and was not afraid to abuse it. Now I freak out every time I get a new scratch on my new truck. By the way, an old college professor of mine has a 1978 with over 750,000 miles on it, same good old 20r motor!

One vote for Chevrolet....

My daily driver is a 1988 Chevrolet K1500 w/5.0 ltr. and manual trans.I purhased this truck used at 36,000 miles from a dealership. It now has almost 121,000 miles. It has the original motor, trans, clutch. There is a little (oil)blow by on start up from valve stem seals.I'am using regular gas in it and get decent mileage.I use it for work and haul heavy loads regularly, tow a 4000 lb. boat twice a year.It also can go through about 1.5 feet of snow. This truck has NEVER not started for me(except when the original starter went around 89,000 :D ).It still runs smooth and accelerates well.I'm gonna be lookin for a Chev/GMC(maybe Dodge Cummin's) as my next ride.I would not consider a Ford because I think their design team is getting ahead of their testing team. Also have had personal experience w/Ford products.Toyota's Tundra is still not a true full size pickup(which I need) although it's a nice truck. :)

Ok...I have to vent...

Who in the *ell needs that 4-wheel steering thing anyway? I mean come on...Really!

I laughed so hard the first time I seen that commercial on TV with the guy backing that horse trailer up.
What a gimmick! I'm sure it has it's place, but for the average person? I think not. How many thousands does that little trinket cost?

I dunno...Maybe it's something to brag about while you and your buddies are gathered around the barbecue with your favorite brew.

Although I'm not a rice burner fan, the Toyota's and Nissan's have some reliable stuff. I have 3 friends with Toyota's, and they swear by them too.

My only problems with the ricers is the cost of parts, and the fact they are not 'American' made. I would much rather support our companies than the ones overseas.
But then again, most of the newer car parts are made in Japan! :D

H.

Minor point here ...

yes, that 20R is a looooooooooooooong haul engine

no doubt

but

hang a couple of thousand pounds off the back, and youll junk that sucker in no time

unless you have that dual rear wheel motorhome chassis, but those things are geared so tight, you would go crazy with the motor taching out 4000 (sounds like 40000!) RPM to go 65

and really, cmon, we like big boats, fine if ya got a skeeter boat, but even skeeter boats are getting ridiculous, big ol full size trucks get it done every day, day after day, year after year

I wont knock chebby either, mine has 140 on it, yeah, leaks oil like a sieve, blows it out the pipe, but she starts right up, blows icy cold air with that recharge i finally put in her, (converted over to 134) and shifts flawlessly, 700R overdrive, and that big nice riding quiet car gets over 20 rolling down the big road, A/C on and going well over the speed limit, and can it hold a load?

33378118.jpg

Thats a 1966 40 horse Johnson Super Sea Horse, on TOP of all the OTHER sh!t in the trunk, lol, yep, its got a cave for a trunk!

(I wont say it around the car, but I really cant wait to get my Ford Van back on the road, I still have the old super duty rear sway bar, this van already has a front sway bar on it, put that Trans Am style wheel on and lets roll!!!)

Chevy rocks, Ford is better, but if ya like what ya got, thats the trick

its not getting what you want, its wanting what youve got, been beatin my head against the wall 41 years to figger that out, hope the rest of the lessons arent so tough, lol

:D :D :D :D :D

H, if we are talking about need, how many people really need 4WD? How many people need an SUV? For that matter, how many people need a Harley, or a garage on their house, or ... Get the point, it is not always about need, but about convenience, appeal, and perception. Do away with that, and our economy would go south quickly!

The 4 wheel steering is very enjoyable, makes backing and tight manuveurs very easy, is fun, and for some has "status" attached to it. No, I do not own an all wheel steer vehicle, but have driven several and would love to have one ... someday.

So, to answer your question, not many people need, but drive one and you will WANT it.

Re: GMC/CHEVY or DODGE RAM

I have noticed a common trend here. People with American vehicles get all misty when the odometer passes 100K and the thing still runs. Sure it leaks oil, smokes like a mosquito truck, and starters haven't made it. Toyota people get all misty when the thing passes 300K miles and the original engine is still chugging along without the grease spots in the driveway and no EPA red flags pouring out of the tail pipe. I guess if extra space and towing ability are priorities, then full sized trucks are what you "need." But my little Toyota 1/2 ton and fathers Isuzu and my friend's Nissan all hold more payload (fire wood, chicken manure, gravel etc.) than my buddy's Ranger or his S-10. Even the little Isuzu is more reliable than theFord or Chevy. Like I said, I don't buy new vehicles, and I have gotten to a point in my life where I will own a vehicle permanently unless it is lost to an accident or an offer I can't refuse. I have owned my 1986 4Runner since 1990, and my 1988 4Runner since 1999. Both have over 250k Miles on then and I intend to drive them for the foreseeable future. Looking at a cost benefit analysis, how many of you can that you get that kind of return on the money you spend on a full size American truck? I bought my '88 for $2400, it is an SR5, loaded, power everything with cold A/C. Paid $4000 for the '86, it is manual everything and after 13 years starts every time, doesn't smoke, has been severly abused, and looks like crap. Paid cash for both :D Now these have been sound investments :)

Re: GMC/CHEVY or DODGE RAM

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Limited. This little puppy is unbelievable. It currently has 115,000 miles and doesnt burn a drop of oil or does it leak anything. I average 20.2 mile per gallon and it will dig thru snow like a beast. It has a 5000# towing capacity and pulls my boat like it is not even there. It has better stopping power than my dads new Dodge Ram but then again, it has the same size rotors and pads as that truck with less weight. The only complaint I have about my jeep is that it has been hit 4 times in the left rear bumper. Not enough to leave a dent on the body, just enough to leave a scrape like a grocery cart hit it.

Re: GMC/CHEVY or DODGE RAM

Just thought I would let you know. We decided on the Gmc/Chevy. There are some Questions about the mechanics of the Dodge that worry me. Also with My prejudice against Chrysler products If things where to start to go wrong with the Truck I would probably drive it off a Cliff. Also the fact that the GMC does not have a door pillar on the ext cab was a selling feature.

And for you Homer It will not have 4 Wheel Steering. If I can back a Dump truck and 40 foot trailer w/o it I certainly do not need it on a smaller truck.
