I have a 2001 Yamaha 250 ox66 on a 2001 Edgewater that has what I assume is a clean aluminum fuel tank. Two years ago I broke down twice with clogged VST filters but was fine last year.

Over the weekend the engine was shutting down on plane, so I limped 5 miles back into to the harbor for repairs. Diagnosis was that a hole in the membrane of the low pressure fuel pump combined with clogged VST filter burnned out the electronic fuel pump.I am told this is is very rare and am curious if the explaination makes sense. This resulted in a whopping repair bill of $1750. If I can't stop this from reocurring, I will need to sell the boat.

Here's my strategy:

Learn how to change out the VST filter and do it every season (Can someone repost instructions)
Change low pressure fuel pups every two years
Stabilizer in fuel
10 micron filter.

anthing else?

Thanks

very very rare to burn up the pump, I would want to see the bad pump myself.
VST maint is every 200 hours OR once per year whichever occurs FIRST just like in your maint and owners manual.
same as cooling system maint and some other stuff.
follow the schedule, paying attention to the hours OR the calender and its easy.
when was the last O2 sensor cleaning/testing? let that one go to long and you can post about lean burned pistons.
I guess that will be a yamaha problem as well.
however, there again, its all a part of the maint schedule be it by hours or by calander.
choice is always the consumers.
low pressure pumps I always reccomend changing every 3 years, especially on 3.1 and 3.3L motors. they tend to eat them.
a bad lift pump can dump raw fuel into the crankcase and wipe out the crank/rod assy.
that 10 micron fuel water seperator will be useless unless you carefully follow the maint requirements. if you wait until it passes water/debris its way to late.
go by your dealer and look at almost any of the marine tech guides, all since about 2002 have the maint schedule for OX66 EFI and ask for the tech bullitens on O2 sensor maint.
