going forward in reverse and reverse in forward

The boat goes forward in reverse and reverse when put in forward. When put in forward the cable at the motor goes forward and when in reverse the cable goes back just like it is supposed to. What else could cause this problem? The motor is a 1977 85 Mercury outboard.

Just take the throttle off and turn it around!

I will bet someone had the gearcase off to repair the waterpump. It needs to be removed again and the shift shaft turned CCW until it clicks into neutral. Now set the MerControl to neutral and reassemble.
