Going from a 150Hp Evinrude to a 140HP Johnson

We have an Evinrude 150HP 1988 motor on our boat and it is shot. The local boat mechanic shop has a 1993 Johnson 140HP that they will sell us. They guy there was telling my brother that it should perform about as well as our 150HP did. The 140 is a 4 cylinder and the 150 was a 6. Is the 140 really going to be close to what we had? Our 150 was running really bad for the last couple years so it was a real dog out of the hole and didn't run very well. The guy (of course he is trying to sell this motor) said that the 140 will be great out of the hole but may not have the top speed of the 150.

The boat is a 1988 Four Winns 18 ft. We are trying to decide if we should go with this used 140 horse or spend a lot more and get a new power head for the 150.

Any thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

140 is a great motor .......... sucks allot of fuel but I doubt you will see too much loss in performance.

I have always be biased towards the 140 over the 150 so my opinion is not very fair. I doubt you will see much difference between the two outboards if they are both functioning normally. With your 150 being sick the 140 should trounce it and you will be happy. I had one on a 17' hull and it would run 60MPH.

This is one of those "Its your call." The 140 will give good performance on an 18'er. It is lighter being a four cyl. and would be easier on fuel consumption. I had a 140 on a 19'er and ran the crap out of it for my family of five. How do you know the condition of the 140? Can you verify condition?

Thanks for all the replies.

Our 150 has been sick for a few years. The head gasket had been leaking for a while and there hasn't been much power at all. Then last year we lost one cylinder and it died. I was thinking that the 140 would seem really powerful compared to what we had for the last few years. With a 19 pitch prop we could hit about 58 mph, but I wasn't too concerned with the speed as much as I would like the power out of the hole. My brother and I like to slalom ski and getting out of the water has been REALLY tough the last couple years. When the 150 was in its prime we could get 5 skiers out of the water, not I don't think we could get 2.

I don't really know the story with the 140 at the moment. My brother just talked to the shop today and we are going to decide this weekend what we are going to do. I would like to ask them what the back ground is on it. I know they don't have hour meters so how else can you tell? compression test? the look of it??? I would like to know what the story is and if the water pump is good, I think that is what lead to ours dieing.

Thanks again for the input.

Is this mtr on a boat or sitting on a rack ? Do at least a compression test on it and check the L/U oil for any water.

The 140 if compression is up to snuff and you have the correct prop for your hull and the 140 will be a VERY good runner. The V4 omc's have decent torque...one of there big pluses. I run and have run several of the V4's and there only drawback is they can b thirsty fuel wise....so to sum it up....if it where me.....if the compression is up to snuff I wouldn't bat an eye at swapping.

You'll use a little less fuel and weigh a little less. I don't know the torque numbers for the two motors but less rotating & reciprocating mass = a little less torque out of a V4 but who cares? 140 is already a lot of motor on a little boat :D ( <--1990 140 on a 16' deep v)

The 140 is 122 cu in V4 looper, the 150 is a 149 cu in V6 crossflow. tough to call. the V4 being a looper has flat top pistons, higher compression ratio. Loopers in theory should be more fuel efficient. The V6 should be smoother. A six is much easier when it comes to exhaust tuning over a broader range of rpm which helps increase fuel efficiency. If both engine were in good health, the top speed will only be about two mph difference. Holeshot should be better withe the 150. Also these engines might or might not have the same gearcase. Some looper 140s did use the v6 gearcase, different gear ratio though, while others used the smaller crossflow v4 gearcases.
