I have a 1986 150 Evinrude, i think. That was what i was told when i bought the boat. There is no sticker anymore (stupid idea to have something that peels off) and the freeze out plug is not a number that the dealership recognizes. This does not make sence to me. I have a feeling that the engine was rebuilt at some point. Could this be the reason the freeze out plug is not useful? What are my options at this point in solving this mystery. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Outboard was probably stolen at one time. That is the most common reason for removing identity.

Or the sticker simply fell off when the glue got disolved by gas or oil, like mine did. I agree that it is a bad idea to just have a sticker. With some pics, the guys on here can get you close to a model number, the more pics and details the better.

Did you find any numbers on the core plug? At one time you could call Evinrude with a serial number and they could tell you when it was made.

The number on the core plug is R8157776. I called a local dealer and they said it was an invalid Serial number. Apparently the BRP office got hit with a bad storm and their services are down right now.

I think the R at the start of that serial number means it is a replacment powerhead, for whatever that is worth.

correct. It's a replacement powerhead. Have the same on my V4. Your dealer should really know enough to identify that simple and common fact...

If it's a crossflow you really don't need an exact model number to get your replacement parts because SOOOO much was interchangeable. Mostly just need to know what size shaft, and what generation ignition/electrical system. Well that would explain the power reeds. And why it runs like a raped Ape for a 150. Here are the pics anyways.



So explain more what a replacement crossflow power head is? Where can i see one not installed? Would like to learn more about them and my options for the future in the way of parts.

A replacement powerhead is just a new engine section that is put into an outboard, like a longblock. From your pics, I don't think it is 1986, the 1986 uses 2 3cylinder powerpack, that motor has 1 powerpack mounted on top, something that didn't show up till 1989.

Ok so it was originally a 1986 based on the cowling.

I am wondering if the power head of the 1989 fit the lower of the 1986?

So the original engine would ahve been either the:

E150TLCDC

or

E150TXCDC

What would be the determining differences in the two? Or at this point, like ryguy said, would not matter since the power pack has been changed.

Its the E150TLCDC. The E150TXCDC is 25inch shaft.

Yes the powerheads are interchangable, from the late 70's into the early 90's. The main differences are the electronics, and around 83 the carb and timing linkage on the starboard side made a big change. I think you can assume that anything above the lower cowling on yours is 1989-1991. Most of the different model numbers of these engines in the same year has to do options, you will just have to look at the parts breakdowns and figure it out from them.
