That sounds like a really good price if the controlls are included. Make sure that you check the compression in all the cylinders. Really good deals can become bad deals but then it's too late.

Definately check the compression, with all the spark plugs removed at the same time! make sure there spark coming to the plugs.

For the compression test..warm the motor. Pull the safety switch lanyard. Remove all plugs. Move throttle wide open. Crank at least 5- 10 seconds each cylinder.
They should not read more than 10% difference between all cylinders. Don't overtighten plugs when reinstalling.

I have a pair of them and maintain my own. They have been solid and given me no problems in the 8 months we have owned them. They are way out of warranty, so I run synthetic oil in the motor and lower unit. Good luck!

By the way..that price is a killer deal....

that is a killer price. I also had a head gasket issue with mine, it's not that uncommon with the gaskets Yamaha uses, if it checks out it should be a good motor for you.

take the engine to a reputable dealer and have a leakdown test performed, yamaha does NOT reccomend a compression test any more on the 4 stroke motors.
have the laptop or diagnostic test lamp installed and check for codes and engine RPM patterns.
if you dont know the maint history be prepared to change the T stat, pressure control valve grommet and water pump.
then change ALL fuel filters.
add the inline filter between the fuel pump and VST if its not been done already.
best would be to install test wheel YB 1624 and make sure the engine can spin it between 5600 and 5800, if it cant the engine is breaking or not running correctly.
all the testing will take an hour or so at a reputable shop.

First of all to the OP..sorry about my advice on the compression test. This is the first I have read or heard it could not be used....

So Rodbolt...what up with the compression test? Why would Yamaha say not to trust it. If I am testing a motor in the field and don't have what I need for a leakdown test do I not have any options? Thanks

Re: going to look at buying a 2005 115 yamaha any advise??

depending on the complaint and I was in the field I may still use a compression tester.
however, and this I have seen myself, if the ring gaps line up a compression tester wont find it.
a leakdown test will show 70 to 80 % leakage and the motor will idle funny.
if its an EFI motor you will make oil.
some of the little motors have an automatic compression release driven off the camshaft, makes a compression test useless.
so now yamaha simply wants leak down numbers run on the 4 strokes.
if you had a bad valve or a seriously destroyed piston it would show up on a compression test.
if my leakdown numbers are good I quit chasing that dog.
from the few ring gap alignment issues I have delt with, once the gaps line up they wont keep rotating due to the combustion gasses passing through them.

ok well as usual some things are to good to be true... went down there saturday and right off the bat i realized this wasn't the motor for me, the motor was used on a commercial crabber boat ... cylinder 1 and 2 had the same compression around 145 cylinder 3 had like 115 and cylinder 4 was about 140 145... the lower unit sounded like something was rattling around in it so i guess im still looking for a 115 fourstroke 25inch shaft if anyone knows someone getting rid of one
