Friend of mine bought a used 72 Mark Twain with a 120 hp Mercruiser in it. Turns out the block is cracked and he is having a boat salvage yard put a new motor in. He has a choice between a 470 or a 140. I recommended the 140 for several reasons but chief among them he is not swapping out outdrives.

I checked and the drive ratio on the 120 he has in there now is 2.01:1 the drive ratio on the 470 is 1.84:1 If you go with a 140 the drive ratio should be 1.98:1 Not that much difference between the 120 and the 140, but a lot of difference between the 120 and the 470. You might be able to prop out the difference, but I think it's another reason to go with the 140.

Good advice or not?

Most 470 engines that are still living are on there last legs most yards in our area won't repair them anymore

Going to a Mercruiser 3.7L would be one of my last choices. There were problems when new, allthough great potential. Now that they have aged, you're asking for problems.

Naturally you can have trouble with ANY engine, but generally speaking the 120/140 engine is a workhorse.
