first the good news--- after extensive sea foam and a fuel pump rebuild( both ideas I garnered from this site, a high rpm miss has vanished. 3 mechanics couldn't do what a can of seafoam did and a 25 dollar rebuild kit. thanks to all who added their thoughts.
bad news. I found a can of sea foam deep creep the other day( supposed to be outlawed in California and used it per directions on this site. really hit the carb hard with it trying to choke it out but couldn't. Anyway after the procedure I noticed a trail of dark oily fluid coming from, for lack of a better term, the collar that covers the junction of the power head cowling and the lower unit on the outside. It is not raw fuel and is to high to be lower unit oil i think. It seems as through when my engine was stammering with seafoam I cracked a seal. Only other thing I can think of is the carb needs a rebuild and leaks gas from a gasket or two and a couple of fuel lines. Could the leaking fuel drain down the neck of the shaft , picking up oil and grease along the way and resurface coming out of the collar up high on the transom side of the lower unit. It is a minimal amount that usually stops before going all the way down to lower unit.
I ran it yesterday in the river and didn't notice any consequences but i am sure its a crucial seal that requires the whole engine to be disassembled. HA HA . Thanks for all the help in the past and future.
Ps picture is not my actuall engine just a reference to show where fluid is
