Hello.

While on a visit to Oz my father in law decided my flakey boat paint was annoyin him so much wanted to do something about it so he rubbed it down thoroughly, undercoated it and resprayed it with cans of paint from our local DIY store. I have no idea what type of paint it is but as its the top half of the boat rather than the water half I am not to worried. I would like to add to his work by putting some kind of protective layer over his hard wirk. Any reccomendations?

You need to know what kind of Paint he used before you try and apply a clear coat over it.

Coming from a body guy, urethane water bournes and enamels are best to clear coat, what will happen is the reducer in the clear will react to let's say a oily paint thinner and cause your coats to blister. I'm doing automotive paint on my bayliner. I generally spray ppg and HOK paints automotive paint is recommended if your boat isn't sitting in water for months at a time. If its a trailer baby meaning you fish ski for a day and put it back on the trailer you'll have no issues. Also check out interlux boat paints on YouTube. Its a roll on application and lays flat as glass to a mirror shine. Was considering going this route but I'm doing mulit layered paint with some wild airbrushed graphics. Hope that helps you. I would strongly suggest you stray away from aerosols . Spend the money do it right.
