Two questions:

Do I need to put "lower unit grease" in the lower unit or can I get away with the current 90W lower unit oil? The motor has a metal info plate that says to use the grease. I have asked around and have not been able to find any. Do they still make lower unit grease?

Also, is this little engine water cooled or air cooled? I have looked around and I can't seem to find any hole in which water would come out of when the motor is running or where water would enter. The actual engine does not appear to have any kind of water jacket on it or water ports.

thanks

Re: Goodyear 1.5hp :

If the motor calls for grease, check an auto parts store for Lubriplate 105 white engine assembly grease. Should be water cooled. Can you post a model/serial number? Should be on a metal plate on the front of the transom clamp.

Thanks for the info on the grease.

The model is D25-3562, serial number is 256683

That most likely is a 025-3562 48/49. same as the Gale 1G5 only produced in 48/49 and 49/50

A 48-49 Sea King probably has a wobbler impeller, located behind the prop. It is water cooled. Nice little motors.

Re: Goodyear 1.5hp :

An interesting point about the water intake. It's in the cover plate of the wobbler pump. Being located there, water can't get to it. So there are holes in the propeller, ahead of the blades. Water pressure in that location is fed through the holes and force feeds the water pump.

That gearcase won't hold oil. Most people use the 105 Lubriplate assembly grease as already mentioned. NAPA Auto Parts stores has it under their own part number.

Yes, there are holes in the prop. Thanks for the diagram. I just bought some #105 grease at Napa.

I will try to get it started tonight, however I am still unsure of where the water leaves the motor from.

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Goodyear 1.5hp :

One more question. If I remove the pump housing plate to inspect the pump, is there a gasket underneath the plate? Or is it metal on metal?

If there is a gasket I am assuming they are no longer available so can I make a new one using regular gasket material?

Thanks

There is no gasket between the plate and pump housing and it won't work if you put one in there. There is a gasket between the pump housing and gearcase. Probably not available and if you make one it has to be the right thickness because it affects the gear teeth clearance.

The rubber impeller in the pump is properly called a "rotor". It must be the exact depth as the housing, and fit the off-center eccentric snugly. The outer diameter must just touch one side of the housing and there must be a space between it and the housing on the other side as shown in the picture. That space appears at the inlet and progresses around to the outlet as the eccentric makes it wobble in the housing. The space fills with a gob of water at the inlet, carries it around to the outlet, and forces it up through the cooling system.

Re: Goodyear 1.5hp :

gunman, it takes a J6C if you are talking about the same motor. More than one company made Wards motors. Plug .030, points .020. Points are available if you look hard enough, and expensive.

Re: Goodyear 1.5hp :

Hey gunman,
Might be a good idea to start your own thread. We need the model/serial number of your 1.5 hp motor to give the right answers. You need to pull the flywheel and inspect the magneto if it doesn't have spark. Could be a bad coil, dirty points, bad wire or connection. If it doesn't have a F-N-R shift, it's a direct drive outboard...most of which used Lubriplate 105 white engine assembly grease (check auto parts stores or online) instead of hypoid oil. As already explained earlier, these lower units take grease instead of oil because their seals aren't tight enough to hold oil. Good luck.
