One of the best, well delivered and powerful speeches I've ever heard.

My hats off to Zell Miller for sticking to his beliefs regardless of his party. :)

To me, it spoke volumes to have a Democrat speak so strongly against their own candidate, and so supportive of Bush and his fierce determination to keep us and our families safe against terrorism.

Kudos Senator Miller!

Tylerin I loved the spitball statement too. :D

Did you guys see Zell on Hardball. He told chris to shut up, and he wanted to duel him with pistols, and he wanted to go to the studio to get up into his face. Wow what an exchange.

I had said, in a previous post, that Arnold Schwarzenegger put the last nail in John Kerry's political coffin. Well, tonight Zell Miller lowered John Kerry's coffin into the grave AND kicked the dirt in on top of it. :D

Re: GOP for Zell

What has happened to the party I've spent my life working in?" Miller asked.

"Time after time in our history, in the face of great danger, Democrats and Republicans worked together to ensure that freedom would not falter. But not today.

"Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator."

Miller gave a keynote speech at the Democratic convention in 1992, also in New York. At that time, he called his "a party of hope" and said Republicans "dealt in cynicism and skepticism."

"They have mastered the art of division and diversion, and they have robbed us of our hope."

Wednesday night, Miller said Democrats lacked good judgment, not patriotism.

"In their warped way of thinking, America is the problem, not the solution," Miller said. "They don't believe there is any real danger in the world except that which America brings upon itself through our clumsy and misguided foreign policy."

Miller also went after Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. Miller, a former Marine, said Kerry has weakened the military through his votes as a senator.

"This is the man who wants to be the commander in chief of our U.S. Armed Forces?" he asked "U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?"

The crowd then jumped to its feet, roaring with applause.

Referring to the Senate record of his Senate colleague from Massachusetts, Miller said "20 years of votes can tell you much more about a man than 20 weeks of campaign rhetoric."

"Campaign talk tells people who you want them to think you are. How you vote tells people who you really are deep inside."

Miller said he supports George Bush because the president has "a good heart and a spine of tempered steel." The two met when both were governors and the Georgian appreciated the Texan for his religious beliefs and his straightforward manner.

"I like the fact that he's the same man on Saturday night that he is on Sunday morning," Miller said. (Transcript)

The Georgian, who is not seeking re-election, had sharp criticisms of his party. Democrats have said Miller is a member of the party in name only.

Miller, who was appointed and then elected in 2000 to fill the term of the late Republican Sen. Paul Coverdell, will retire when the term ends in January.

He also wrote a scathing book about what he sees as the Democrats' drift into irrelevancy, called "A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat."

That was the best thing I've witnessed in a very long time. Chris was visibly shaken and very defensive after. Then, MSNBC would not show it (they tried to sanitize it) during Joe Scarborough's show right after. Joe had to scream at them on the air to "run the tape"

Zell also said, sure your a big man when you're way over there in Herald square. I'd like to see you try this stuff if I was sitting next to you and could get up in your face.

Zell Miller is now on my A list. He smacked two of the biggest jerks on the planet (Kerry & Mathews) on the same day!

The Dems are already attacking him. Susan Estridge was on Fox claiming Zell had some mental issues.... It is going to get really ugly but they better be careful. I am sure he knows where a lot of bones are buried

Re: GOP for Zell

She ain't the only one Ralph. Read on.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, a frequent target of Miller's crusty Appalachian wit, went so far Wednesday as to accuse the senator of attacking his own party to sell books.

"If he were just another Republican with a book, he wouldn't sell any. But a Democrat out whacking Democrats sells books," McAuliffe told CNN, urging Miller to switch parties.

Democratic National Committee spokesman Jano Cabrera released a statement afterward, saying Miller sounded like an "angry, rabid elephant."

"His speech was nothing more than a series of irrational and inconsistent political attacks cobbled together by his Republican handlers," Cabrera said. "And though three years ago, he called John Kerry a friend, one of the greatest leaders of our time and an authentic hero, tonight, for political and personal gain, he adopted the smear tactic refrains of the Bush administration."

Re: GOP for Zell

I am a lifelong Republican, and also somewhat of a news junkie. I would not consider myself a far right republican, just a small businessman with a fear of rampant government involvement in citizens lives. In fact some of the far right scare me as bad as the far left.

With that said, I think the Elephants are doing a much better job in their convention of selling themselves than the Donkeys did. Zell Miller has made the most conservative speech I've seen so far.

I'm not a big fan of the President, but he's had a major obstacle placed in his way in the form of 9/11. I wouldn't mind hearing Kerry's views on what he would do differently, but he has not come forth with that as far as I can see.

The Democratic party has been hijacked by the far left, and that is really a problem for them. The far left and right both have their zealots, but it seems that a Democratic presidential candidate cannot get nominated unless they pander to the far left. The problem with that is that a far left candidate will have a hard time getting elected.

I would like to see moderates of both parties nominated, and then have debates on the issues. We may not ever see this in the ampped up times of 24 hour cable news media (still a news junkie tho!)

Enough politics! I need to get back out to my boat! It's been three weeks!

Zells speech was about AMERICA.. it wasn't about a Dem or a Rep, it was about AMERICA!

Thats what it should be about. A conservative Democrat, what a concept.

And, never, EVER **** off a Marine.

Re: GOP for Zell

After the Democrat convention the pundits said the election was Kerry's to lose, basically that Kerry would walk away with it if he didn't screw up. What losers.

Zell Miller had a great speech, and he was a Democrat before Terry McAuliffe could flush after himself. Who more than him has a right to bemoan the direction his party has taken?

Let us who support Bush not gloat or assume he's got it wrapped up either. I'm not fond of Kerry, but he's been a successful politician too long to simply write him off. And he's got several big machines behind him. The fight is starting to look better, but it's still going to be a fight.

I want to hear tonight's speech. I haven't enjoyed a political season this much since Reagan ran for re-election.
