hello i got 1.7 ohms on my stator check by hooking to the yellow and yellow/grey wires. book calls for 1.3 -+0.1 for a 6amp alternator.
does this seem ok or should i replace all other checks are ok on it.not sure of the alternator i have. all other alternators have a lower ohms reading.like 9amp 0.75+-0.2.does anyone have a 1979 70 hp johnson they can compare for a reading.thanks a million.

I don't have the specs, but it sounds reasonable to me. Any chance it is an aftermarket stator? It should charge, even if wrong amount. I assume it doesn't show any continuity to ground, right?

It is fine...go with it. .4 ohms won't make a diff.

Accurately reading that low of resistance is hard to do unless you have a very expensive meter. You are fine. Did you also check the resistance to ground? You should get no reading.

hey thanks thought everyone was out fishing!Yes the ground check was fine,I went ahead and ordered a new power pack and coils for 150.00 this should fix my problem.mtr been sitting for a while.runs fine until it slows down then it wont speed up most of the time, have 2 wait for the rpms to pick up then i go full throttle.carbs are rebuilt, fuel pump is ok,all other checks under the fly wheel pass flying colors.the flywheel gets hotter than normal as for the stator, and the engine is ok too touch, but the stator is almost too hot to hold your finger.you people are awesome.

Stator should not be that hot.
I would put an ammeter rated for 30 amps in series with the regulator output to the battery. It is the large red wire from the regulator/rectifier to the starter solenoid. Disconnect it, put the ammeter in the circuit there following correct polarity. Plus toward the reg/rect, minus toward the starter solenoid post. Set meter for amps, make sure it will handle 30 amps. Check your output amps from regulator to the batt for charging. Look for elevated charging current right after starting, and slowly dropping toward zero as the engine runs and replenishes the charge lost from the starter motor draw.
I suspect that your battery is aged and pulls more charging current than it normally would if it were a new battery.
If it runs and outputs 30 amps (for instace) constantly, and never drops as the battery charges, this is wrong.
It should not be that hot. Keep running it as hot as that, and you will burn it up, and be replacing it anyway.
