Got a 77 deckcraft boat with omc 175 hp motor in it and just got it running and did test run today and it wouldnt move, Im new to boats and I thought with the throttle lever (see pic) when you move that it controlled forward and reverse, now I think I am wrong. In the pic the circled part does that control gears somehow? Behind it in the wood looks like it has a lever on it but nothing on outside.... please help

Your outdrive is a electricshift. There two coils in the bottom of the outdrive that engage to make it move the front one is for forward and naturally the other one is for reverse. Go look inside the engine compartment and look where the intermediate housing goes out the transom there will be two wires on the right side as you look at the housing. Those are the wires that feed the power to your coils. If you follow those wires back toward the engine you will find them connected with spade connectors. Pull one of the wires apart carefully and check it for resistance, should be between 4.5 to 6 ohms on each one. Remeber to pull one check it and then replace it to check the next one. I am not trying to be funny but you can;t mix them up or it will shift backwards. If you have the right resistance then your coils are good if not the outdrive will have to be repaired. If you check out fine then remove the green wire ( I believe that is the for forward) turn the key on and check to see if you have 12 volts at the connection if not then you have a problem with the swith that sits behind the shift lever.

The button below the lever is meant to break the connections to the shift wires so you can work the throttle (for starting the motor, etc,) without engaging the prop. IIRC they call it the lockout switch/button. With the button pushed IN the throttle lever should shift the drive into forward/reverse when moved forward/back of center. With the button pulled OUT, you should get throttle only when moving the lever without shifting into gear. Do a search in this forum for 'stringer info' and you will find a thread I made with a bunch of basic info & specs that might be useful. I suggest you get yourself a factory manual asap if you are going to diy. RR50 above made a good suggestion to check the shift wire for power at the connections and to check the coil resistances. If they are original, the connections will be what's called 'knife' connections and not spades. They come apart by bending at the center of the connection (think of snapping a twig) then pulling apart. The connector kind of 'scissors' together/apart if that makes sense. (It does in my head anyway. :D )
