just felt like a little bragging lol though I do have a question at the end. we've been having problems with water in a 1986 175hp yamaha engine. its got 150hp carbs on it...dont ask.

anyway, after pulling the tank out of the boat and draining/cleaning it, we decided to drain all the carbs just for sake of argument. I've only been around the engine for 2 years and the neighbor has had it for about 10 years.

apparently he's never serviced the carbs lol. second jets on #2 and #3 were completely clogged. one on #1 was clogged. cleaned them all out and gained another 500-600rpm and better holeshot as well as the boat is now able to hit 34mph when in the past it could only do around 28mph.

nice.

on the flipside...its now reached the limits of the 5/16" fuel line he has from the tank to the engine. at wide open it will bog down starving for fuel unless you keep a steady squishing on the fuel bulb. we also attribute that to trash that is apparently still in the tank and that you can visibly see getting stuck on the filter and restricting flow.

but yeah. should be ok once we swap to 3/8" fuel line.

he's got the factory service manual for the engine but is looking for it...in case he cant find it. whats the procedure for setting the carbs up fresh? considering he's never serviced them and had others set them up (even with the jets clogged the way they are) its common sense to think they arent set up correctly and I'd like to do this just to have it done properly. I think it makes sense, what do you guys think?

If pumping the bulb makes it run better it maybe a fuel pump issue and not the line being too small. I believe the size line you are using is more than sufficient. It could be dirty carbs or trash as you say causing this too. To answer your question with a question, "Are you setting the carbs to specs for 150 carbs or 175 carbs?" They may actually be the same anyway. Good luck.

well right now we're just trying to find the factory specs and setup instructions for the carbs. I'm tempted to just set them up for the 175hp settings since thats what they are jetted for. It might make the engine run a bit rich but at that point I can just back out of it a little and it should be about right. at least thats what I'm envisioning based on past automotive carb work.
