17 ft w/ 80 hp merc,i have had this boat 2 months and the guy who have it had the floors redone but put external gas tanks in and removed all gauges andput cover plate over where the gauges were. how important is it that i dont have a tack or other gauges, as i am treating this like a big crab boat very basic. i dont think i am over reving and dont have money to waste if its no a major big deal not to have them

If you get nothing else, get a Tach. Under or over-reving your motor can be deadly to it. As long as you maintain your cooling system, you should be OK. $40.00 or $50.00 is cheap insurance to know that your rig is running at optimum performance.. A handheld voltmeter will tell you if the system is charging and is very cheap..

MY favorite guage would be one for water pressure... This will ensure you have a good water pump working...
