Got Running...Backfire out of exhaust now?

Hello, I'm new to the forum and to boating. I picked up what I thought was just a parts motor today. Its a 80s model johnson 115. I ran a compression check on it and found out it had 125 on all cylinders. I cleaned the carbs. Hooked up the gas to it. So i guess all i need to know is what to do about the controls.

What color wires have to have power to run?

What wires do i ground to kill the motor?

Re: Starting motor without controls?

Have battery cables attached to starter solenoid (pos) and powerhead ground (neg).

Jumper from battery terminal of solenoid to small 3/8" nut of solenoid will cause starter to crank engine over.

Ignition is self contained and as above, igniton will be engaged.

Kill circuit in effect by grounding black/yellow wire of powerpack to ground.

Jump Starting outboard
#1 you need a really sturdy mount. lots of torque there. you connect battery cables ground to block, postive to top post on solenoid. mount the muffs on water intake, connect hose. now with a remote starter switch, auto parts store, connect 1 wire of the switch to the top battery post on the solenoid, the other wire to the top small post, turn water on, squeeze switch, motor should turn over. CAUTION: there are only three ways to stop the motor, disconnect fuel line, choke the motor, or remove all plug wires. DO NOT rev the motor higher than 1500 rpms. it can cause a run away motor that cannot be stopped, other than disconnecting fuel source, but in the mean time, may throw a rod, etc.

Re: Got Running...Backfire out of exhaust now?

Thanks for all the help you have given so far. I got the motor running. I only ran into one problem. My battery cables were too small and wouldn't turn the motor over fast enough to crank.

If I let the motor idle every few seconds i get a POW! (like a backfire coming out of the exhaust) What could the causes of this be? Like i said i already cleaned the carbs, i tried switching the plugs. I have good spark on all cylinders. Great compression. What could this be? Timing maybe?

Could be a lean miss, did you remove all the jets and clean followed by compressd air?

Re: Got Running...Backfire out of exhaust now?

To be honest i think your right i just walked back in from outside. It started to idle alot faster and the sound went away??? atleast for now. lol. i guess it got some trash back in there somehow and it pulled through. This 115 revs alot higher than my other.

I have water coming out of everywhere now. The 2 holes (i think there for exhaust) there is a steady stream like a water hose from one of them. Its also coming from the rear where the steering arm is. Actually its basically leaking out of everyhole on the lower/mid unit. Whats the fix for this? Or is this okay? it seems to keep the motor extremely cool.
