Re: Got second degree burn in restaurant... Grrrr

Man by the title of this trend I thought you were going to say that they spilt a boiling pot of coffee on you or in your lap. Then it would be there falt.
I like burning marshmellows on a stick in a fire, but I put the flame out before I eat it.

I Would get mad if I paid for a pizza and it was not hot.

It would be one thing if he hadn't made the special request for it not to be hot... but to make the special request, and then have them not honor it... where the hell has customer service gone to? I don't know about you, but I at least make an earnest effort to try and make sure my customer's get exactly what they ask for. That used to be the norm, no matter what business you're in.

Could he have worded his request differently so they understood what he was asking for? Sure. But on the other hand, anyone who speaks fluent english would have known.

PS - The arguement that businesses shouldn't hire people who speak fluent english because it might be more expensive for them to do so doesn't hold water here. I'm sure there are plenty of HS kids who need jobs that speak fluent english.

There are also lots of other jobs out there for people who speak spanish primarily, and these days, those jobs pay a lot better than pizzarias do.

I guess they should have told him.
Sir I am very sorry but they made it to hot so would you please wait a minute for it to cool so that you do not burn your self or we can retry and and get you a pizza that is not so hot.

Bottom line is that the waitress should have warned him that they screwed up.

Once, I went to a pizza place and asked them not to cook it...I wanted it for later and to me it's better cooked the first time as opposed to reheating it. They told me they would not do that due to health regulations. They would not cook it halfway either.
Could be that it has to be a certain temperature to keep the local health department happy.

Warm in Spanish sounds very much like English - uorm.

I don't know what to make of all this other than as mature adults, we all know about hot pizza. I think a little personal responsibility should come into play here somewhere. Sorry.

i agree with the personal responsibility stmt. i also think the person who took the order and then gave the customer something they explicitly asked to NOT receive should bear some responsibility...but only to the point that they suck, shouldn't get a tip (i'm sure it was small for a couple of slices though).

the roof of my mouth got burned just reading the word PIZZA. always happens, i'm like your kids, Mark....food in front of me, i'm eating it. somehow i manage to slow down when skin is dangling down but that's about it. i don't ever think to blame the pizza place, hot pizza is their life.

wildmanimal...that McDonald's example is so over-played. McD's was warned several times to lower the temp of their coffee...it was 160 or something, scalding. another customer got burned and McD's got what they deserved. read up on it a bit...classic example used in school. headlines made it sound like she was just complaining but it was a legit case.

sorry to hear about your lip, ouch

you guys have never seen a pizza place where you can buy by the slice? they don't make individual slices in the oven...they warm a slice up from a previously made pizza. damn just burned my mouth again.

Down here we have these little joints called Ci Ci's I think. They are like a pizza buffet. They have several different pizza's, pasta's and salad. The pizza'a are already cooked and kept warm under lights at perfect temp. They have apple cobbler pizza, sticky buns, and brownies for desert. My 13 yr old and I love it.
Wish I had a nickel for every time I burned the roof of my mouth on hot pizza. Especialy the frozen ones I bake myself and grab the first slice right out of the oven. If you blow on it Mark you can cut that waiting time waay down.

About all of the pizza places in NY and NJ have pizza by the slice.
They warm it to order..That should take all of 2 minutes in the brick oven.

Sorry about the burn Mark.

I agree people who work with the general public should speak the freakin language!!

I also think people in the workplace should speak the language. However, Mark went to that same business for years, knowing that it hires illegal aliens. Doesn't that kind of shoot down his argument? I mean, would you pick up a day laborer at Home Depot and then complain to the store management because he didn't understand your instructions? Home Depot tolerates illegal alien day laborers in their parking lot because it brings in more business. The pizza shop hires illegal aliens because it allows them to cut costs. By patronizing stores which profit from illegal alien labor, you're pretty much putting your stamp of approval on businesses which are soft on enforcement of immigration law. It seems to me that you'd be willing to take the bad service that comes with the low prices.

Re: Got second degree burn in restaurant... Grrrr

Representative Peter King on Long Island years ago proposed a referendum that we should stop catering to spanish speaking people, with signs, voice mailboxes, and etc. because he said most of our forefathers being immigrants, in the past learned how to speak english, and these people should also! Otherwise, it will just continue to contribute to their lack of ever being able to fit into society, and I agree.

I think the lack of communication here is the root cause of the problem. So sorry you got burned Mark, by the way, I like my pizza warm too, not hot, and I've gotten burned occasionally in the past also, though not as bad for this same reason.

CiCi's = Go stuff yourself on the cheap.:) Those sticky buns are GOOD!

Sorry about your burn Mark. Personally, I don't think any food (yes even coffee) should be served at a temperature hot enough to cause physical damage on contact. But I wouldn't sue them unless they dumped it on me and even them only if they refused to pay for my medical bill. I don't have any kids of my own but I have nephews. If I took them somewhere and they got burned by the food I'd sort of feel responsible. Especially if it was the little one. That wouldn't stop me from telling the management how I felt. His/her reaction would determine how I went from there.

Seriously, Tell them to wait and tell them its hot then let your kids get burned , we all ate hot food and got burned once as kids .. it happens its part of growing up. Once they do it they will never forget to check their food and they will probably sit and wait till it cools down. Who is incharge anyway you or them. Too many people these days are bringing up sissy kids that makes for sissy adults with a warped sence of entitlement that can't handle themselves in the real world. Pretty soon they will be dumb teenagers with no drive selling pizza for the Salvadoran that now owns the pizza place.

Nice.
With one exception (assuming you are a parent), I can't think of any friends, family or co-workers that would intentionally hurt their kids.
I agree we all learn many things the hard way. I bet if we took a poll, the majority of adults have gotten pizza burn too - knowing the pizza was hot and knowing the consequences.

Bingo mthieme.... I still burn myself from impatience but I'd never intentionally do anything to harm my child.

Tough love is the best love..

No offense, but this is not a case where tough love applies.

Wow.... Today I learned:

1) blowing on food cools it down (ya think?)

2) I'm raising sissy kids.

3) I should practice tough love and let my kids get burned to learn about hot foods. I have a table saw. Any suggestions on how they should learn about the dangers of that tool?

This is all too much on election day. I'm getting sensory overload.

LOL
Battery acid came to my mind.
You forgot, they're going to wind up with a minimum wage job working for Pedro!:)
Curious - how old are the kids ?
Obviously, a toddler would be less likely to know these things and require more attention.

Hey I'm not saying intentialy burning your kids LOL I'm saying tell them to wait tell them its hot if they then burn themselves because they were impatient and didnt listen its not the end of the world here. Its a life lesson. And if your impatent, burn your own mouth infront of your kids you should let them know it hurts and let them know its your own fault not for waiting. Not place blame on the poor guy making a killing $$$$ selling slices in a pizza joint. If your going to sue someone over that you have completly lost touch with reality. Come on..

Re: Got second degree burn in restaurant... Grrrr

Reminds me of the Mc Donalds hot coffee spilling incident, where the lady spilled a hot cup of coffee on her lap.

Really? This story reminds you of an unrelated story where the media completely mis-represented the facts, McDonalds got their butt rightly sued for ignoring health ministry warnings and the list of complainants was as long as your arm????

Sorry, but the McDonalds coffee case is not what you think it was and it's a pet peeve of mine when it gets mis-used to make a point. McDonalds deserved to be sued and settled out of court to avoid owning up to the facts of the case.
