Got ticketed for my trailer...

So after I couldn't get back to sleep one morning, I decide to go grab my trailer out of winter storage. I get it and on the way back I get pulled over for having an out of date reg on my trailer. I had the sticker and the registration on me, though I forgot to put it on. I got a ticket for not properly a fixing the registration to the trailer. I also was wanting to remove the previous one before I put this one on. I asked him if I should put it on and he just shrugged, I put it on anyways. Anyone know how much a fine like this would cost and I think I will try to see if I can get it dismissed. It is easy to remember to attach a reg sticker, for your car at home, though if you have it stored in doors some where, that makes it is easier to forget it. I wish it they would renew it in the summer instead of the winter. I guess I should just register it in Maine.

I had a lot on my plate that week as I was getting ready for my wedding in less than a week.

Was the LEO in a bad mood? Were you? If you didn't have the sticker on you, I would understand. Maybe they need the money.

Yes, seems odd. Only time I got pulled over for expired tabs, I had them in the truck. Officer said to make sure to put them on when I got home and sent me on my way.

Does your state offer permanent plates? I have permanent tags on my boat trailer so no stickers required. It costs a lot up front but after owning the trailer for several years it's well worth it.

I've been pulled over for the same exact thing. The trailer was legal with a current reg but the sticker was old.... I've been let go after they look it up. I didn't even have the sticker on hand.

How old are you and were you driving over the limit at all?

He must have been having a bad day or something

Re: Got ticketed for my trailer...

I got stopped on Sunday driving a friends car ... the registration had expired 7 months ago and she had not renewed it (and she was not with my wife and I in the car) ... paperwork got lost or something, it really was an oversight. Officer and I laughed about it and then he asked for my drivers license ... umm, that is in my wallet, back in my room. More laughter. Checked out my license and it was current. Told me to get my friend to register the vehicle on line that evening. No warning, no fine, no nothing, just some good laughs.

Yep, I thinking either the LEO was POed to begin with, or you did something to get LEO in a foul mood!

In NY, trailer registrations expire every Dec. Or at least the boat trailers do. They, DMV, will pro-rate your registration if you register it in say April. Saves me about $25 per year. When you do an online renewal, they will give you a 10 day temp registration which you need to carry with you but no sticker to put on the plate. You'll get your valid registration sticker in the mail with the actual registration for the year.

In (2) years time, I pay more for my boat trailer being registered than my tow vehicle!

I think it all depends on where you are and what you're doing as I got nailed a few years back for the NY Safety Inspection on my Trans Am by none other than the NYS Parks Police. Got it inspected that day and turned the receipt in with the ticket - charges were dropped. But I got nailed in another way....hit & run as I was pulling into the shop to have it inspected. Wasn't my day that day. $1k in damages to a freshly restored car

Sorry for your troubles. Sounds like the officer was a sticker.

I am so glad we don't have to deal with that crap here.

Re: Got ticketed for my trailer...

I got pulled over by a police officer for not having a current registration sticker on my car license plate. I had the new registration with me in the glove box . . . the officer said just to put the sticker on, so I would not get pulled over again.

I think you got a raw deal.

I would go to court and see if you can catch the judge in a good mood, that's strange that he gave you a ticket and you had the sticker with you. were you polite? did you give him attitude?

All you can do is go to court and politely explain your error and hope the judge throws it out as he should...Its not like you had not paid your fees for the up to date sticker..

Re: Got ticketed for my trailer...

You still need valid plate stickers for Maine registration...
Not sure how that's going to help...

Maine issues a 5 year tag. So you don't have to worry with it every year plus you save on taxes.

Wasn't the fine listed on the ticket? Is it really enough to justify your time and effort to fight it?

Since I only have a 16' and live in WI, no trailer license needed... :)

Re: Got ticketed for my trailer...

I spoke to my neighbor who is a Deputy Sheriff for the county I live in, not the one I was driving through. He said he would have never given a ticket for that. I had the sticker with me in car and I put it on while I was stopped. I was not rude and when he told me what I did, I said I was sorry to inconvenience him. I wasn't rude or condescending, I had no idea I was going to get a ticket either.

The ironic thing, a friend of mine was texting and driving as he passed me, ribbing me for being pulled over.

Re: Got ticketed for my trailer...

I just retired as a LEO after 33 years service .......all I can say is he was a being too keen on the job ....I would never have written a ticket for the tags not attached if they werent expired ....of course now we got a new crop of rookies coming in and they seem to have a quota attitude........that was one of the reasons I retired .........I just go for compliance and safety
