Got towed in today (first time being the towee and not tower) 2008 glastron 225 GT with 5.0 GXI-J with SX-A 1.60 outdrive. Engine only has 125 hours. This is a new boat to me this season and my first EFI boat.

so my boat ran fine all day on the lake and we stopped on the way back to the dock. when I stated up and put it in gear it would not move. so I thought it was a lower unit problem. So I turned it off and it restarted fine and I put it in neutral and tried reving the engine and it died. So it starts fine but seems to not to be getting enough fuel...I think? So after I got towed back my dock slip about an hour later I started it up and it sounded great and was able to rev the engine with no problem for a few minutes..i was about to put it in gear to test it out but then the same thing happened. It was getting dark and I had to call it quits for the day. oil pressure seemed fine and it was not overheating.

could this just be the fuel filter? any help would be much appreciated

Well it does sound like not enough fuel. Maybe filter, maybe tank vent, pump, cracked line, etc. Maybe start at the filter and go from there.

Pull the fuel cell apart and clean it

thanks for the input. I will order a new filter and check inspect the cell, lines and fuel regulator. I am over an hour away from my boat so I am really hoping to solve this from the water. the pump never made any squealing noises so I am hoping its not bad and they are $1000 or more. Anyone know if my 2008 is one of the models where the inside of the fuel pumps were painted? Since I am far away I would like to make every effort to eliminate potential causes this weekend. 1) replace the filter. do i have to depressurize the system first? and do i need to fill the new filter with fuel? 2) should I just buy a new fuel regulator? Can I clean it with carb cleaner? or to eliminate it from my list buy new one.. OEM is $200 but i have found some after market ones at $75 3) should I replace the anti-siphon valve?

Before you replace anything, check everything. I found a whole new fuel cell assembly for $755 on eBay. My original had no flaked paint, however there was some corrosion where the orings seal water-jacket from the fuel cell. There was a service bulletin for the regulator, replace screen with and 'e' clip. You can order on iboats (www.volvopentastore.com).

Oh yeah check anti-siphon valve and check fuel line for corrosion from any fuel with ethanol. You'd be surprised how fast ethanol breaks down fuel line?!

Thanks. I did see the service bulletin about replacing the screen with "e" clip. Not sure if I have it or not. I did read another post where someone was arguing that removing the screen was like taking out the last line of defense from letting paint or other blockage into the engine?

any idea where to find the right anti-siphon valve? cannot find part number or size anywhere

oh yeah thanks for bring up ethanol. I plan on checking vent line and supply line.... what about additives for EFI boats. any special additives for VP engines

Update on my fuel Issues:
I replaced the fuel filter( gas looked good, no water or debris) checked and cleaned anti-siphon valve, pickup line and tank vent. Then I replaced the fuel regulator. Screen was partially clogged with paint chips.
Started it up and the pump was whining and I had the same result where it would start and then stall after 30 seconds?FYI the pump did not whine last week when I got towed in. So I was stumped and though for sure it was the pump.
I checked the electrical connection on the low pressure pump and it had no corrosion and had a good connection. The High pressure pump connector did not ?click in? like the low pressure pump and seemed to be loose. I made sure it was on as tight as I could and started it up with the pressure gage connected on the low pressure pump.
Ran great and pump whine went away. ?low pressure was at 14 psi..then I restarted with the gage on the rail (high pressure) and it read a constant 73 psi?.Took it out for a ? hour test drive and ran great. Went back to dock and waited 20 minutes ?then started it up and again ran great for another ? hour.
The only 2 changes that I can think of were:
  1. If my high pressure pump was not connected or loose?.would that be the reason why it would start but not run or rev past 30 seconds?
  2. Or is it possible that just by hooking up the pressure gage on the low side was enough to stir the blockage if that was indeed the problem
Finally I know both readings were a little high. Do you think those readings are ok?
Thanks
