In my opinion a combo unit is the wrong thing, especially for offshore.Too much chance of losing both at once.

Garmin GPS and Lowrance or Furuno SONAR, unless you are a competent navigator and have charts, etc.

Re: GPS/Sonar ?

I have a Garmin498 and love it. I only use the gps function because I have a fishfinder also. For the price ($380 on ebay) it was a steal. Most there are going for about $450-500 these are new in the box color units. They dont need the expensive chips like other units either. They come with the coastel U.S map pre loaded this shows everything. Go to the Garmin website and look it up.

I gotta agree with FLuke, I just bought a Garmin 498. Is a now discontinued model so you can get them cheap. I paid just under $500 for mine including a transducer and internal antenna. Came loaded with Garmins charts, has depth contours and spot soundings like a chart. Fishfinder is better than my old Humminbird fishfinder. You can't go wrong with a Garmin. Garmin also has a highly regarded customer service department, should you ever have a problem.
