Need to replace my GPS unit have seen some with the internal antenna looking for pros and cons on these or should I just stay with and external antenna? Open cockpit boat and no hard top.
Thanks Bob

Re: GPS Unit

I've had both types and the external usually buys me an additional satellite or two on real over cast days or working around structures like bridge pilings. The antenna on my boat is mounted up on the hardtop so it?s probably a matter of getting it up and above the surrounding structure more than anything.
The difference in accuracy I see between the two is negligible.

Re: GPS Unit

Line of site and how high you can get your antenna are key. You will get better performance with the external, but the hand helds work pretty well these days.

Re: GPS Unit

Here is what I have found out with the internal/external antenna for your GPS units. With some of the internal units, there should be a spot for an external antenna, where you can get an external so I would say go for the Internal type but make sure it has the MCX Antenna Connector, then go on to E-bay and type this under the search bar "GPS Antenna for Garmin".
