Grady White or Boston Whaler at half the price?

Hi guys,

I am thinking of buying and importing a used 26-30' US boat, and would ideally prefer the superb build quality of a Grady White or a Boston Whaler.

But, I find their price tags to be daunting.

I guess you usually get what you pay for, but are there other boats available of comparable quality & seaworthiness, but at a significantly lower price level? Any recommendations?

"...comparable quality & seaworthiness, but at a significantly lower price level..."

there's your problem. i don't think you'll find comparable, but you can find quality at a lower price.

after owning a grady for 2 months now, i've come to realize why they cost so much. yes, the entire hull is hand laid glass, with zero visible wood. but it's the little things that add up, and make the cost what it is. it's the panels in the deck to allow me to remove and replace the gas tanks if i ever need to. it's the 20 or so deck panels that give me access to everything i need. it's the ss hardware throughout that is through bolted with washers and bolt caps- everywhere. it's the lips on every box or compartment that makes them waterproof. the hoses that connect every drain to make the boat a real self-bailing boat. the 150 gal fuel capacity, 10 gal water capacity, holding tank with macerator and pump out, 2 freshwater pumps, raw water washdown, aerating baitwell, 3 heavily insulated fishboxes, windshielf wipers, bow pulpit, etc, all on a 24' boat.

but do you need those things. start eliminating them, and the price goes down.

if you want a grady or whaler, look hard and you can find a used one that has been repowered. i think you get the biggest bang for your buck with that scenario.

Agree. But probably a better shot with the Grady - Whalers have a mystique about them - I will not argue if it's deserved or not - but their used prices are still very high. (For reference, the sticker on a 2005 new Whaler 180 Dauntless at the local dealer is $41K. All I can say is wow!)

Center Console or Walkaround? If WA, then outboard or inboard?

Kelly Cook

Ditto Mattttt.

The prices on used-but-not-abused Whalers and gradys are high because they are better boats than most new ones and they hold value better than other boats.

Couple of examples: I bought a Boston Whaler Sakonnet new in 1966 for $3200 and sold it in 1983 for $6500; I bought a '73 Sport 13 for $1200 in 1994 and sold it for $2,000 in 2000.

I did sell Ryan T my 1981 Montauk for what I paid for it in 2000 ($8,000) but he could sell it for 10 or 12 grand in a minute.

I never owned a Grady, but owning a Whaler is unlike owning an ordinary boat.

I'm still running a Boston Whaler Sport 13 that my father bought new in 66 and I wouldn't take a million for it.(Well, I probably would, but it's a heckuva boat)! :D

See, that's the kind of customer satisfaction that makes me want to get in on this!

Aren't there any other "Grady-wannabe" brands out there that offer similar quality?

Over here, we'd have Karnic and White Shark as such, but I don't think either is as convincingly good as a Whaler or Grady.

BTW: Probably WA cuddy cabin with 4-stroke outboards. Doesn't have to be a full-blown fishing vessel as it will be used primarily for hauling family, kids and friends around. It's primarily the sturdiness of GW/BW that attracts me, but the layout could be that of a cruiser.

There are other high quality boats, but they aren't "half the price".

Look at Scout, Parker, Edgewater.

Del Quay are pretty nice also, and more likely to be available in Norway.
Good luck. :)

I know JB is just very slightly biased when it comes to talking Whalers, but I absolutely agree - they're terrific boats.

One hidden advantage - if I'm out and the sea cuts up really rough, it feels real good to know that as long as the motor keeps running and I'm not stupid enough to capsize it, swamped or not, my Whaler will get me home. I've never had quite the same feeling with any other boat I've been in.

This one is a workboat, and gets neglected a bit, but I wouldn't swap it for any other make. Guess I'm very slightly biased too!

Good list from JB. To that might want to add Judge Yachts and Stamas. Pursuit is also outstanding, but likely just as pricey as the BW and GW. Many cabin boats that big are inboard, so the OB choice narrows the field some.

Kelly

Used Grady, Whaler and I would add Parker to the list would be a great way to go. This is especially true if you are willing to do most of your own maintenance.

A year ago I made the decision to upgrade to a Grady White 208 20' Cuddy. Knowing that the new fully rigged price was over 55K I decided to look at the used market and waited for the end of the summer boating season. Ended up finding a 1995 208 for 17.5K has the same SV2 hull being sold today. Purchased a new trailer for 4.5K and put some weekends and additional 2-3K into repairs and upgrades.

I now have the quality boat I wanted and know it inside and out. Have had it offshore many times 60 miles or more chasing the Albacore tuna and never worry about that next scratch or ding. Best of all its paid for!
