I bought a 1990 175 Johnson and the idiot previous owner painted over the grease fittings, so when I use a grease gun I just make a mess. I will replace the fittings in spring, but auto parts has both metric and SAE fittings. I assume this is refering to the hexagon lip, and that the threads are the same either way. Is this correct?

No. The threads are metric also. I would go with stainless nipples if you can get them. You might have to get OEM and not aftermarket, but I'm not sure the Johnsons use stainless steel ones or just plain steel.

you may have to remove grease fittings take with you to auto parts store check pitch to see if they are sae or metric.you might try a torch tip cleaner a try to push the ball down to clean them ive done before and works mostof the time.mine were metric i dont know about yours

Re: grease fittings

My guess is SAE, but only a guess. I think I would do what racer 15 suggests. You could try acetone to clean out the paint however.

Re: grease fittings

Just an afterthought. You might try the Johnson/Evinrude forum. Someone there would probably know if it is SAE.

Re: grease fittings

Why not just take a little paint thinner on a rag to the grease fittings?

Re: grease fittings

If paint stuck to a grease fitting, it means it was never greased, and you got bigger problems in the pipeline. But, (Bondo is probably right here anyway) wouldn't it be wiser to take a fitting off, and then replace it? Instead of buying something that you are guessing at that MIGHT fit. I have a grease fitting plastic divided container with over 16 different Zerk styles and threads

Re: grease fittings

I've seen paint that would stick to grease. Or it was cleaned then painted. Just pull the fitting out pop it on the grease gun and see if it works! You can check the gun on a car or another fitting.<br />Tim
