Yeah, I know – enough already. Gotta say, though, can’t figure out how some of you boys can apparently replace an impeller and NOT get it all lubed up. When I’m working on a lower unit, I’ve got grease and crap all over screwdrivers, hands, shop rags, manuals, you name it. By the time that impeller is in the housing and in place on the shaft it’s been slicked up with lower unit oil, exhaust crap, grease from my KFC or McD lunch, and probably stuff I don’t want to identify.

Remembering the owner’s manual from my ’62 VW, with a pic of a guy’s forearm and hand pointing to the dip stick – nice tweed jacket, white cuffs showing just the right amount. Should have a blow up of that on the shop wall.

I don't install impellers word for word from the manual. I have my own way, done it on hundreds of outboards and works, so stick with it. I hold the impeller housing upside down in my hand, and twist the impeller into it. No grease needed, just quick turn and in she goes. Then install that on the shaft, lower down onto key and bolt her up. Easy Peasy, no mess, no fuss.

Then I do put grease on the drive shaft splines, and the grommet that the water line slide in. I find that important.

Just my 2 cents, and my way, doesn't mean its right, just what I do since it has worked for me. Not anything wrong with greasing them, not worth debating, lol, as long as you don't use anything to compromise the compound in the rubber.

I use olive oil to grease my grill.

No, no scottmm. You heat the bejeebers out of the dirty grill, then wipe it down with a wrapped towel or something similar. If you want to add olive oil (say, to fish), you rub it on the fish with your hands, then grill away. Your grill initially might smell a little like last night’s steak. My impeller might smell initially like French fries, or whatever else. They both work fine.

Installed impeller with the aid of some dishwashing liquid. Ran the motor today at full throttle for 15 minutes with no problems

These postings again confirm that when a question is asked about ---oil / grease / lubrication you get all kinds of answers.----------Proves that lubrication of machinery is not well understood.----That is why the shelves in stores also have lots of " mechanic in a can " elixers , because folks buy the stuff !!!
