i have a new trailer...karavan i believe..when i picked it up the guy told me to add grease just untill i saw the plate the grease fitting is on move, then stop. well i checked them the other day..one took about 3 pumps....the other side had a lot of grease around the grease fitting...as if it leaked out...it took about 5 pumps untill i saw it move....does this mean a seal is broken..i hope this is understandable!!!

if the seal is broken, you will get grease on the inside of the wheel and tire. the grease around the fitting is usually a human error, that the grease gun was not completely on the fitting, before you pumped. when thru wipe it off.

Rob, mine have always done that too, if I pump til it moves, then tow it for several miles, the spring pressure tends to expel the extra grease past the plate. I wipe it out, then it's clean until I pump more in. I've never had to replace a bearing so they work fine that way.

even though you are using them,, you should inspect and repack the bearing every year atleast. i have lost a tire before, because a kid at the tire shop messed up. cost me $1000, to put a new under carriage on the trailer, still messing with the shop, that messed up.

Re: grease outside bearing

my plan is to inspect them at the end of the season after i put the trailer up on blocks for the winter...my ramp is 5 miles from my house so i'm not to worried about them...once i saw the plate move forward with the application of the grease i felt better. although it can't hurt to take them apart before something does go wrong...maybe sunday...thanks for the tip
