Greasing New Gimbel bearing

Pretty sure I read somewhere a fellow who'd replaced the gimbel bearing but it wouldn't take the grease too.

after replacing mine and then greasing it,, the first time,, the grease was just exiting around the wall of the housing,, slowly but steadily across.. and none was entering into the bearing. I read a thread with a photo simular saying it wasn't fully inserted,, but mine was..

But,, the bearing houseing wasn't angled right,, the tabs were tilted just off top dead center..

So, I pulled it back out, and re-aligned it as can be seen in the photo they are now at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock,, and with the grease hole at 3 o'clock,, it should be as good as it gets. ,, but now,, the grease is exiting right through the spot it enters from the zerk,.. First was sliding out the outer spot and then it started exiting out in the inner spot only were the zerk hole is in the housing cylinder.. just a big wide glob of grease exiting at both sides of the housing cylinder wall,, and none entering the bearing..

I think I read somebody else saying that's what happened with his, and was advised to just keep pumping the grease in.
But after 2 hours searching in here I can't find that post..

It's getting a bunch of grease in between the seal and bearing, that I'll never be able to clean out,,
And the area closest to me which I can clean out.. but

the outer ring on the bearing housing was pretty full of grease and tough to turn, (adjusting to insure the grease hole is exposed), doubt that it moved when placing the bearing..

So,, Should I just keep pumping it in?
Maybe my little grease gun doesn't have the pressure to push the grease hard enough and I should use a full size, regular grease gun?
?

Pull the bearing out of the aluminum ring. More than likely the bearing you have is not greasable.

As I said above;
(adjusting to insure the grease hole is exposed),
It has a hole for grease which I aligned to the Zerk port ..

given that alone,, even if the bearing wasn't grease-able,, I would have grease exiting in-between the housing and bearing..

All grease in the photo other than the large portion slipping out at the cylinder wall is just residual grease from handling and preparing..

You need to rotate the bearing as you grease it. That way it will grease the entire bearing.

The aluminum outer ring sbould be made like a banjo fitting. So it doesnt matter about alignment. I hadthe same exact prom lem as you. Grease came out the same area as yours. Pull your bearing. I bet it xoesnt have a graese hole.

Re: Greasing New Gimbel bearing

When I install my gimbal bearings I always use a Sharpie and put a mark on the bearing and the housing where the holes are. That way, you know you have the bearing grease hole aligned perfectly with the housing hole. You can't eyeball it which I assume is what you did.

Even though Randy is alluding to the possibility that you could have a grease hole and the bearing still would be a permalub, I don't believe that is the case. You would still have grease coming out between the bearing and the housing which is what you already stated.

Out of curiosity, who makes the bearing you bought and what was the part number?
