GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

So I put the new Apollo prop on yesterday and today I went for a little ride and there is a vibration now from 1300-3200 RPM's. It might be vibrating above 3200RPMs but if it is I cant feel it.

The Apollo uses the interchangeable hub. I checked the prop again and it is on there correct and tight.

I used the thrust washer that came in the hub kit box and greased everything up real good with Quicksilver prop grease.

The only thing I could think of is that the old alum prop used a little washer type thing that has grooves for splines on the inside. This washer went AFTER you put the prop on you would slide this washer on, then put the prop nut on.

The instructions for the hub kit do not show this washer and there were no threads sticking out for it to grip on to. So Im pretty sure its not supposed to be used with a hub kit. The prop nut sits nice and tight and nice and flush against the hub kit too.

Everything is really tight as one would expect. I was gonna try to put the alum back on and see if it didnt vibrate but I forgot the little washer thing I was just talking about.

I love this Apollo prop. It handles so good, gets about 5 or 6 MPH more and almost the same hole shot. And Im at the perfect RPM's (4600) at WOT with it. But I need to figure out this vibrating.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

Does the vibration go away with the old prop??

Sometimes those vibrations are from the bearing in the coupler.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

Took the boat out and switched from the new SS prop to the alum one back and forth three times. Every time same thing. The new prop makes the boat vibrate and the old one doesn't.

I know the hub kit is pretty simple bit I had made another thread just to make sure I was going it right.

Can anyone confirm I have the right kit? It's

APOLLO-993023: Outboard Boat Propeller -- Michigan Wheel Propeller -- Apollo? Stainless Steel Propellers
1 XHS-101: Outboard Boat Propeller -- Michigan Wheel Hub Kits -- XHS? Hub System Kits

On they're site it only gives two options for an omc sterndrive. It's either drives after 1990 or before. Before is kit 101 and after is kit 100.

I have an 88 drive.

Should I call the place I bought the prop and tell them about it or should I call mich wheel.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd call them and see if they will do an exchange....something could be tweaked on that new prop.

Yes...... it would not be out of the question that there may be a problem with the new prop set up of it is your bearing.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

I just called the place I bought it from and they said to send it to them and they will check it and if the prop is out of balance they will fix it.

Shouldnt I get a new prop? Not a fixed one?

If your new prop is found to be out of balance, I would demand a new one. Just make sure they check that one to make sure it's balanced. Although, they probably could fix another new one without you knowing. I guess what you wouldn't know wont drive you crazy as long as it worked good......JMO

When I switched props to a vented and cupped prop, the manual said it'd be louder and vibrate a little and it did. Just my 2 cents.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

I talked to the prop place yesterday.

They said the prop was a "bad casting". They said they sent me a new one and before they shipped it the checked it out to make sure it was perfect.

Should be here today. Ill go put it on the boat and report back.

Thanks

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

I'm glad it's that simple. I just bought a new Michigan Wheel prop for my Alpha that I haven't installed yet. And on the box they show 2 kinds of Cobras and two sets of production dates that are different from the drive types. I was thinking of giving you all the info so you could try to unscramble it. I hope it's just a new defect, cause you'll be boating sooner and with less BS.

Thanks

I have an alum prop and I did have a SS Ballistic prop that I put on it and there is never any vibration.

So I know it was the prop. I just thought also that chances were small that a brand new prop from mich wheel would be screwed up.

Thats why I posted here (and in the I/O forum) just to be sure I wasnt doing anything wrong.

I went to my local prop shop which is really big and they confirmed that I have the right hub kit. I think its XHS-101 for pre 1990 and XHS-100 for after 1990.

I had to get a new thrust washer anyways because I dropped the one to the hub kit in the water when I was out in the bay changing props for the last time when I was testing it.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

Well I put the new prop on and same thing. Vibrating bad.

I dropped the prop off at a local prop shop to have them check it. They're gonna let me know Monday.

So either the place I bought it from just gave me the same one or something is going on.

I dunno but I'm not too happy.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

Well today I got the prop back from my local shop and they said the prop is so out of balance they might not be able to fix it.

So the place I bought it from either gave me the same one back (most likely), Or they gave me a new one and didnt check it out first like they said they did.

So this must be my unlucky week / month. Ive been getting d***** around with this prop now having to send it back for the second time, a bucket tool bag (about $500 worth) of tools got stolen off of my boat while at the marina dock.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

So I sent the prop back to the place I bought it from. They sent me the same prop back saying they fixed it and that it was only a little out of balance.

When I got it back I took it to my local prop shop and they checked it. they said the last time it wasnt just a little out of balance it was WAYY out of balance. After a couple hours they called and said that this was the same thing and that there is a little crack in the same part of each of the 3 blades. They said it would be from the pplace that sold it to me trying to fix it.

Also when I got this one back there was a TON or rust spots inside of the prop.

So to summerize, I ordered a NEW Appollo 15.5X17P prop and a hub kit from Deep Blue Yacht Supply. When I got the prop it made the boat vibrate really bad so I called them and they said to send it in. I sent it in and they said it was a "bad casting" and they were going to send me a brand new one. they also said they were going to test the new one to be sure it was "perfect"

So I got the brand new one (supposedly) and put it on the boat and it vibrated really bad just like the first one. I took the prop to General Propeller (which is a highly recognized huge prop shop here in FL) and had them check it out. They said it was VERY out of balance and that one of the blades was way lower than the other 2. They said that either by accident or on purpose the place I bought it from (Deep Blue) sent me the same prop. they said the chance of me getting 2 out of balance props in a row are slim. They also said that if deep Blue said they tested it first before sending the 2nd one out they didnt because it was so out of balance it completely obvious.

So I get the 2nd one and skipped putting it on the boat and took it straight to General Prop. They said it too was WAY out of balance and had 3 cracks, one in each blade.

So I called Deep Blue and they said to send it back and they will just give me a refund.

I dunno this sucks. I just wanna get a good one. Minus the severe vibrations the boat performs so great with this prop on. No loss in RPMs, RPMs are perfect at 4600, boat goes faster 3/4 throttle that full throttle with old prop on, and boat handles turns and idle speeds WAY better than old prop.

I think you should let Michigan Wheel know about this problem. In the mean time you might want to contact(not sure I'm allowed to do this in the forum) Jefferry@ ptprop.com. for something that will work.

Re: GREAT new prop. Now vibration?

I might do that. Dunno what good it would do. Im pretty srue they just sent me the same prop back twice.

When I took the second one to my local prop shop I forget the word they used for it but they said it would be around $40 to fix it if it was out of balance but they said it was REALLY bad where one of the blades was WAY lower than the other 2. They called it a word but I forget.

And the second one had a crack on each blade in the same spot. It was if your looking at the prop like it was bolted on your boat, on the top of the blades about 3 inches from the center of the prop.

I dunno but I think its from them trying to straighten it.

Plus my local prop shop is a huge place and does props for all size boats all over FL. Im sure if I told M wheel about what they said they would believe it.
