Grind the inner sides of the forward gear?

Can the forward gear be fixed? There is some damage to the clutch dog so I am going to replace it but the forward gear doesn't look too bad. I was wondering if I grind the sides of the gear where the clutch meet with a dremel. Will this work? I have a 1979 35hp johnson. Thanks.

I wouldn't grind on anything, if you remove metal it will be bigger than it is suppose to be.
You may get away with replacing the cluth dog but no, I wouldn't grind on anything.

Lowers are really hard to work on as tolerances are to the thousands, a little too much or too little clearance and you are gonna blow it out.
I have tried to rebuild several lowers and with out the corect OMC tools it is really hard and none of them lasted more than a year.

"Cutting" gears due to clutch dog related wear is very commonly done. Go to your local OMC/BRP dealer and find out which machine shops they use to do this. I wouldn't try to do it myself.

Yep, done a lot but has to be set up to cut all equally and at the proper angle. However, if you go thru the hardness it'll wear fairly quickly.

These things are only case hardened so as said will chew themselves to pieces in a hurry when machined beyond the hard "case"
Gearcutting is not generally a do it yourself thing, unless you are a machinist and have a machine available. Everything has to be perfectly matched and the tolerancing is generally held to within +/- 0.001"
Not to be done in your garage !!!!

some one a while back was building them up, and then recutting.
