Re: Grinding alpha

Well, look at it this way. I have a friend who runs a local funeral home. He told me one time that one of the first things he learned in the funeral business was that you will never see an armored car in a funeral procession. That is why we got into working on older boats; they may not be cheap, but for the most part, they never loose their class. So enjoy it while you can!!!

back for more pointers after some time away... I've replaced the bearings, but I laid the drive on the side and no sooner did i look away and theres oil coming out. Noticed it around the water intake ports and around the prop. but it wasn't coming out there until I laid it on the side. -the oil was kinda gold-green, sparkly (never good) Its supposed to be a sealed system isn't it? so now i'm wonderin what seals i'm looking at replacing... Possibly the impeller seals and and the oil o-ring between the top and bottom?

For some reason, can't seem to open your attachment. Where is the oil coming from? Also, what does it look like? Color?

Re: Grinding alpha

A little more info... I just remembered that last season when I replaced my impeller, the rubber piece that links the water tubes together from top to bottom was torn. I put a rubber o-ring in it, but i know that's not a good fix. could that be one way water is getting in the drive? I also noticed a rubber ring with a small spring on it that went around the drive shaft. Not sure, but maybe that's an issue too. I'm sure it's an issue... I mean they were in there for a reason...

Well, im still not sure where this "spring ring" came from. perhaps the world may never know. what I have found out is that my lower unit is JUNK. The splines on the upper shaft are all chewed up. I found a crack running nearly the full length of the prop shaft housing, the part of the housing directly under the impeller is so corroded that it wont seal (source of my oilly water), and the drain tube at the front of the housing is packed with sand.... so if anyone needs a fairly useless Alpha 1 let me know. The prop shaft is still good....

and pirate, I meant to ask. should it be pretty tought to get the cap back on the drive after replacing the bearing? I really had to work with it to get everything to flush back up....
