76 45 hp batt ingition motor hanging on a 76 14 ft chrysler runabout. Boat speedometer says I am doing a blazing 23 mph. Cocker spaniel up in the bow, ears flapping in the breeze and grinning ear to ear. One happy dog. Let me break here and explain that this boat originally had a 70 horse chrysler but took a dive to the bottom of the lake. I floated it but the 70 was a basket case. I aquired the 45 from a widow lady I know. The controls that came with the 45 was locked up due to rust so I just used the remote and cables from the 70. Back to the happy dog. I spotted a stranded boater so I went over to offer a tow. I pulled up, killed the 45 tied a rope to the other boat and restarted. I put her in gear, and took the slack out of the rope. As I tried to add power, the rpm went from 800 to about 1000 rpm. I advanced the throttle to full open with out any increase in rpm. I throttled back, scratched my head and tried again. This time it stayed at 800 rpm. It turned out that the shifter cable is workink fine, but the throttle cable will not advance the throttle, when hooked up. If I open the connecter at the very end of the cale, it appears to work ok. THe throttle tower is not stiff, so I towed the other fellow back in by manually advanceing the throttle, with a very upset dog because of going so slow.
What could cause the throttle to not advance?

???
Could be a split in the cable sleeve, somewhere along the length of the cable.

Re: GRRRRRRRR $%#^ Chrysler!

I have the cables attached to the engine correctly. Boat was runnig fine and throtels responded right for 5 or 6 trips on the lake. I pulled the cable loose and looked at it from control to motor. Found a couple of cracks in the plastic sleeve but they looked to be really ancient. Metal wrapping under cracked plastic looked servicable. I rigged up a plastic coke bottle with a hole in it for the cable end and filled it with WD-40. Work cable a few hundred times to work the wd-40 down into cable. When NOT attached to engine, cable is free as can be. when attached, throttle tower only moves about 1/4 of travel. It got too dark to see so in a.m., will look into control box

PB Blaster, eh? I'll give that a try when I get back to civilization in a day nor two. Meanwhile, I just got back from pullimg the controls. Seems the bolt that held the lever that the connects the cable to handle came loose. Did some serious wearing of the cast alum peice. Will have to do some filing to try to get it back to square instead of round. Is this common? Should pulling the control and checking the bolt be a routine thing?

It is probably too late but WD40 probably is not a good choice. It will take out rust but not offer any form of lubrication. If you have a Walmart in your area try using PB Blaster. It has teflon in it for lubrication and also is a much better penetration oil than WD 40
