Question for the crew.. Im running (2) 205/75/14's, 5 lug, each is 1760 on a new 3500lb axle. running my 19.6 cuddy around,, it's 2450 empty,,probably 2700 total, add trailer and Im still not to 3500lb.. Probably 300-400 short.. Would a larger tire -->ie 225/75D-15" Tire, Load Range D at over 2000lb per side be worth looking at? Any inherent dangers or issues by bumping up the tires to help the load? or is that a bad idea.. thanks all

You'll still have a 3500# axle. The tires you have now are 20# over the axle rating, Why waste the money?

Geez, I would hesitate to run that much weight on a single axle.

good point,,,no benefit.. as to Bob... it is what it is.......just replaced,, litterally Everything on trailer installed surge breaks too,, except oringinal galvanized frame which still looks new, .. Im not at GTW for the 3500 lb axle.. maybe within 300-500lbs,,, I know,,,spose I could have put a 5500 lb axle on, but did not,,,,if I do that, everything I have now wont fit...bearings, hub/rotor, tires go to 6 lug from 5... If i have problems maybe will have to look at that.. if so, will have a buch of new parts for sale,,,

If you're wanting a stronger tire, Kumho makes a load range D trailer tire in that size. That would be a lot easier/cheaper than going with a larger size. The limiting factor is still gonna be the single 3,500lb axle....and I'd bet you're at (or over) that weight right now. Have you weighed it? Which model of boat is it?

just put new axel on as old spindle one was worn out, bearing where not sitting still, ive found the new axel and spindle from Tie Down with tapered milled definitions, keep bearings home and dont wander around,, if I still have issues, will put a 5500 lb round axle on...

I bet it's more. A lot more. The only way to know for sure is to roll it on a scale. I've never seen a boat weigh as little as the mfg says it does....

Re: GTW limit, larger tire beneficial?

I sort of ran into that issue year before last my new to me pontoon boat and single axle trailer had the 20.5 x 8.0 x 10 C load range tires on it. After having it weighed it was 2500 on the scales with full tanks and gear. C rated tires are at 1100 each so it was about 300 under rated. So I started looking for D rated tires at 1300 each and had a hard time finding them so I went to a E rated tire at 1650. Its still under the axle rating but its nice to have a bit of a safety margin for the load.

Re: GTW limit, larger tire beneficial?

MH, thanks, true...this whole adventure in buying this boat and trailer has been an education for sure... I noted the boat registration paperwork indicated 2500lb trailer.. I thought, na.....that cant be right, surely someone buggered up the paperwork to get a cheaper registration renewal rate...with two trips taken and bearings blowing on each trip, (for different reasons) I thought the spindles on the original axle were causing me the issue..as the new hub/rotors though installed correctly, did not feel like they fit just right... so I installed a new 3500 lb axle..if my future trips for the summer are now incident free, then my problem was the previous owner indeed had a 2500lb boat sitting on a 2500lb axel, even with stuff, fuel, batteries, and a new 3500lb axle, I'm now not over 3500lb now..

The best thing you can do is have it weighted, then you will know for sure.
