After sitting for a year, I started up my new/used motor today. Distrib, coil, pertronix and all wiring remain the same as before.

The fuel system was dry so I had to prime the carb and make numerous attempts to start the engine. Each time I cranked the engine the tach needle would keep racheting up and would not drop back down when I turned the key off. The tach got as high as 3K + rpm in the process and stayed there. The motor finally did start, I had strange whining sounds and a leaking carb so I really didn't pay attention to what the tach was doing while the motor was running.

What in Heavens name is going on???

BTW, I have not yet installed the MSD ignition system.

Re: Guageguy! More tach questions.

Since tachs normally get their power from the ignition switch, they normally stay where ever it was at idle. When you turn the key on, without starting it, it should drop to 0 until you start the motor.
